Personally I have never had them before but from what I understand is that they are really good for keeping algae down (They didn't get their name for no reason;) ) their favorite being hair-like algae. If there's no algae present in the tank they feed of detritus and almost any fish food. Unfortunately, they don't reproduce well in freshwater (although it's still possible) as they prefer marine or blackish phase water for breeding.
 
I'm not too familiar with amanos but it sounds like it!
