what about using aqadvisor dot com? That way you base the water change based on tank size, volume of fish, and filter capability?

    Cheap aquarium plants?

see if there's a local club or fb group and often you can get free or good deals there.

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

fyi - bought some Celebes today, what a outgoing voraciously hungry group! Somewhere said they were shy and I'll disagree with that! Someone suggested Kamaka rainbowfish and they had one at the store. LOVE THEM!!! If all goes well, I might get those next. See if I want to spend that much more...

All my new fish died overnight in quarantine tank

So generally the fish won't have issues with parameter differences between bag and tank?

    Pearl gourami?

Seriouslyfish says up to 30 dGH, fishtankadvisor says up to 25 dGH, spruce pets up to 30dGH for the pearl. I did research and it was only the pearl and (I believe) the blue that tolerate the higher values, most of the others were lower. If close, my LFS is on the same water system as I am...

    Pearl gourami?

I love the cherry barbs! My friend asked why not have just those since I enjoy them, but I want variety! I only talk to the owner, he's been in business 30 years now. I've talked to his teenage employees a couple of times and just left frustrated. He also said the red eye tetra was a bad...

    Pearl gourami?

thanks for both opinions, it is appreciated. I realize that the activity of my barbs will probably decrease when there are other fish in the tank and they're like a bunch of 8 yr old boys right now, since no one else is in their space. I'll consider opinions and discuss with my LFS owner as...

    Pearl gourami?

Greetings! I am planning out my 40 g breeder (36x18x15). My pH is 8.2 and with 20 dGH, 14 dKH. The tank is cycled, the water has been very stable. I put in 6 cherry barbs and 2 mystery snails last week that are doing very well. I plan to add another medium fish, such as the Celebes rainbowfish...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

Thanks, Essjay. I see how happy my little cherry barbs are in my 40 g tank (esp with no other fish yet) and I love seeing them thrive and having fun. I wouldn't want to put fish in my tank that can't "stretch their legs". I'm really considering the Celebes rainbowfish since they're smaller...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

so the 55 gallon footprint is 48x12 = 576 sq inches mine is 36x18 = 648. so actually bigger, just not as high. but is it the length is more important? Most rainbows are a little pricey for just starting out and making sure I do things right. My LFS wants $36/pr and $50 for the two that would...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

Thanks Byron. The forktail rainbowfish is quite appealing. Although not sure my LFS has that one and it scares me to order online... and the red eye tetra. Perfect parameters and a heckuva lot cheaper for a beginner ;)

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

Here's my tank. I'm totally obsessed and quite pleased how it's coming out. (I need to replace the moneywort back right corner, although the barbs love eating from it, but that's a whole 'nother story).

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

I keep avoiding livebearers because I don't want a bazillion babies. Are there any species that are okay with male only schools?

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

that would be good to know. Our LFS has some rainbows but charges far higher than other places (2 hours away locally, or online). I just can't justify spending $200 on a school of fish in some cases, and certainly would be upset if they died. thanks,, I'll keep that in mind. Mine is a 40...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

I tried to use seriouslyfish today, and didn't work for me. I was afraid it wasn't up anymore, since the last day posted is ages ago. It's still in use? I did find a nice list of hard water fish on another post here from last year. As well, I bought Schliewen's A-Z book and might've just gone...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

ah, most said over 55 gallons, I think b/c they like to swim a lot. I have 6 cherry barbs and 2 snails. My plan was probably another schooling fish and cories (or other bottom dweller). Possibly a centerpiece fish, but we'd see down the road. The celebes rainbowfish looks interesting too, going...

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

I was just looking at those. They say to keep as single species tank? They are an interesting fish... I love those! But a bit too big for 40 gallon?

Favorite alkaline (pH 8) fish, hard water

For anyone having hard, alkaline water - what are your favorite fish? I have found some lists of fish that do well at pH 8. And, my LFS is on my water system and his water isn't too far off from mine, so I'm not as worried about finding guidelines, but I'm certainly not sticking discus in my...

    Stocking ideas for 40 gallon

makes more sense! Mine is 15" deep as well and I misspoke, so ours are the same. My nitrites just declined today,, so excited to put fish in! My plan is brilliant rasbora, but I'm going to call LFS when they open to make sure of what raspbora and tetra species they currently have. Good luck!
