    Third group of fish

Five banded barbs are a bit unusual, they can sometimes be calm but they are very active and will chase each other quite a lot. They also patrol the bottom of the tank sometimes unlike other barbs. Looks like I will be going with a group of tetras, although it will have to be one of the hardier...

    Third group of fish

I've actually taken danios off the list, heard from some people how they aren't the list relaxing fish to watch. It'll either be some honey Gouramis or a group of hardy tetras.

    Third group of fish

I'm not too bothered about a colour theme, as long as there is good compatibility between the fish. That's the main thing for me.

    Third group of fish

I've got 9 five banded barbs and 6 Juli Cory's in my 125 litre but struggling to think about what fish to add for my third group which would fully stock my tank. So far I've been thinking of either some danios, some tetras or a pair or trio of Honey Gouramis. Advice would be appreciated. pH is...

    Internal to external filter

I don't use real plants in my tank, I mainly use silk plants. Although I do have quite a lot of them to make sure the tank has plenty of history of spaces, also managed to get my hands on some artificial floating duckweed as real duckweed grows like crazy. Thanks for reassuring me about my...

    Internal to external filter

Well my concern has been that my current filter will be straining if I have 9 five banded barbs, 5 or 6 Juli Cory's and 10 lemon tetras. I was thinking about waiting until I get the third loss of fish in before switching to the external. Unless you think my current filter would be good with...

    Internal to external filter

My tank is slightly bigger than yours so the 207 should be fine, heard compelling arguments for a few options but I've got time to decide, although at the moment I'm leaning towards the 207.

    Internal to external filter

So you're saying that the U3 sponges would fit much easier into the 307 than the 207, makes sense. I take I'd just mix the old filter media in with the new filter media that comes with the new filter so that the bacteria would colonise on them too? I'm considering the 307 purely because it...

    Internal to external filter

Thanks for the detailed reply! Yeh I thought the 207 would be okay, the 307 would just be taking up extra space in the cabinet and uses more power and the 207 would already be overfiltering. I'll have to cut two squares into the lid of the 125 to fit the intake and outtake pipes in but that...

    Internal to external filter

At the moment I have 9 five banded barbs, planning to add 5 Juli Cory's and 10 lemon tetras. The tetras will come in a few months once my tank has matured.

    Internal to external filter

Oh I wasn't planning on overstocking my tank, I was just concerned that my current filter won't be enough for the fish I want to keep. Also heard that external filters are just better in general.

    Internal to external filter

After a month or so of having my tank up and running with fish and after doing a bit of research I've noticed that upgrading to an external filter has quite a new benefits. Especially when it comes to increasing your stocking. So I have some questions about it. How do you deal out your filter...

    Lights for new fish

I have turned the lights off now and will keep them off for the rest of the day, they went a bit crazy for the first few seconds after switching them off bur calmed down quickly. Yeh I was advised at the shop not to feed them for the first day as they'll most likely be too stressed to eat.

    Lights for new fish

Well today was the day I bought my first fish? A group of 7 five banded barbs, they've been in the tank for just over an hour but seemed quite timid and were sheltering hunched together at the bottom in one spot under my floating plants. However I noticed that when I changed the light colour...

    Water change after cycle

I had to drain the tank down to the substrate as I asked bicarb soda to get my PH up as it was crashing and stalling the cycle. Although in other circumstances such a large water change wouldn't be required.

Are fish science flakes any good?

I've had a read of some stuff and it was rather interesting, I wouldn't have known any better and would've just gone for flakes otherwise. I think I'm going to start off with a combination of Fish science tropical granuels and some New Life Spectrum pellets with the garlic in them, I've heard...

Are fish science flakes any good?

Ah that makes sense, the reason I'm thinking about granuels is because I've found some decent ones that are made up of insect matter and the five banded barbs I'm getting like to munch on insects in their natural habitat. Although they're omnivores so will take vegetable flakes and pellets as well.

Are fish science flakes any good?

Do you think it would be best to feed a mixture of flakes and pellets/granules then? As well as the occasional batch of live food.

Are fish science flakes any good?

    What about granular food?

Are fish science flakes any good?

That's the impression I got, it's nice to give the fish some live food every now and again but that it shouldn't be their main food source.
