Ideas & advice for fish stocking

Ah that's a pity, thanks for your advice guys. X-ray tetras look interesting and seem to be hard water tolerant, they might possibly be a good fit for my tank? Failing that, I think I'll try to get either CPDs or emerald rasbora depending on what my LFS has stocked, and maybe 1-3 patterned...

Ideas & advice for fish stocking

Ah yes, Seriously Fish is the website I used to rely on. It's been a few years since I last looked anything up so I'm a little rusty. Shame it's unusable right now. Thanks for the tip about emerald rasbora. That's also reminded me I used to keep a spreadsheet of potentially suitable fish...

Ideas & advice for fish stocking

Thanks essjay. Thought as much, although some sites tell me mollies are fine in a small (10 gallon) tank. But I'd forgotten they also like a bit of salt, so perhaps not the best fish for a planted tank. So this is a list of fish I've kept before in this tank and I know they work well...

Ideas & advice for fish stocking

Meh it's 2ft wide and not quite square, but deep enough to make 120L. It's a Juwel Lido. Thanks for the advice, I love the look of tiger barbs but I will try to find an alternative. Perhaps I can find a platy with black and white patterns for a similar look. Or perhaps a dalmation molly...

Ideas & advice for fish stocking

Tank size: 120L, 2 ft square Water: Very hard, alkaline Plants: heavily planted jungle style in soil substrate Cycled: 2 year old established tank Current inhabitants: 9 cherry barbs, 2-3 ancient Amano shrimp and a lot of pond snails. I would like to try a group of 6 tiger barbs in this tank...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Thanks RCA!  I've replanted the crypt at the back of the tank to replace the red lotus which I think is finished.  The lotus was overshadowed by the salvinia which tends to collect in that corner of the tank and also I think the lotus is a bit more sensitive to lack of ferts than the other...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Six month update. The new cherry shrimp are doing much better than the previous lot, all the adults have grown huge (or at least bigger than I expected cherry shrimp to be!) and there are at least three shrimplets courtesy of the female who was carrying eggs when she arrived. I've not seen any...

    Indeed, looking lovely!

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Thanks Charlie, I've been keeping an eye open for some unusual endlers for a while and grabbed these when I saw them for £5 each.  They're especially impressive when they colour up for a dominance display, which they can do at different times of the day.  So non-dominant males will normally be...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Thanks guys!     Not at all, the snails have been invaluable in helping to keep my tank clean.  They are also useful little helpers in the occasional unfortunate event of a dead shrimp or fish in the tank.  In a tank packed this densely with plants I've got no chance of finding and fishing out...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Trimmed the plants a bit since it was starting to look a bit overgrown.     This was quite a lucky high-speed shot of a male threadfin flaring while racing against another male.  I somehow managed to pan the camera at the rate speed to keep the subject more or less in focus!

Fish Shipping Bags- What You Need To Know

Sorry to hear about your losses TTA.  It must have been heartbreaking to see hand-raised fish dying for no apparent reason.  I hope you have better results with the new bags.

    Nice To See

That is very encouraging Charlie, good to see good support for fishless cycling from suppliers.   When I saw the link to our beginners resource centre I automatically assumed that it would be a link to TTA's guide.  If not then it should definitely be updated!

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Lovely looking plant, isn't it?!  It took about 3 weeks before the bulb put out any leaves at all and another 3 weeks for it to reach a decent size but it's worth the wait.   There was a burst of activity in the tank this morning with male CPD's chasing the females around the tank.  It was a bit...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

The red lotus at back right is starting to look great.       The underside of its leaves are a really intense ultraviolet colour!

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

I went back and bought the remaining six CPD's from the LFS today.  That's as many as I can get for now until one of my LFS restocks them.   I'm a bit worried about my M:F ratio.  I seem to have 9 males and 3 females.  My lone female from the original batch was not looking very happy today...

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Thanks TallTree!  (Although that's the second time you've got my name wrong, haha!) Does Australia restrict imports similar to the way New Zealand does?

    Daize's 120L Soil Tank

Thanks for the birthday wishes!  I'm not sure whether 20 would be too many but I'm pretty sure that 12-15 would be fine.  They sell in bundles of 6 anyway so I'll aim to get another 6 asap and possibly increase to 18 from there if it feels right.   It's cool that we have the same taste in fish...
