    Green water/algae bloom

I don't see a point to this. Since I must use root tabs under my sand (it's inert PFS), it's just going to happen again after I re-set up the tank. I can't grow the plants I'm growing without macro ferts. Plus I have nowhere to put my fish if I have to cycle the tank again. There has to be some...

    Green water/algae bloom

Ok so I've been doing this for a couple of weeks and it just seems to be getting worse. I even got some polyfil/filter floss and threw that in my HOB filter, and added sponges on the intake of the HOB and powerhead. It's now almost opaque green. I've never had this happen before...it has to be...

    Green water/algae bloom

I know it's not unheard of when tanks are only a few months old to have an algae bloom. I've been trying to get even a little control of it but to no avail. Background: It started after I added some osmocote root tabs deep under the sand substrate. I pushed the tabs all the way to the bottom...

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

Red Oak, White Oak, Pin Oak, Black Oak, Bur Oak....depending on the habitat. I believe the most common directly around my area is Pin Oak and Black Oak.

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

Oh that's cool - will any species of oak work or does it have to be a specific kind? I think I know of a few places I could look in the fall.

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

The large fish don't necessarily have to be Pearl Gouramis, they are one of my considerations, however. I've never owned them but I've been admiring them. I had to google those Panda Garras, I would love those! Sadly, I have never seen them for sale here (Ontario Canada). I've owned the...

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

Thanks for the info. I've never used almond leaves but have been intrigued of late because of all the benefits they provide. The only thing that was keeping me away was that they dye the water. I will look into finding some (somewhere?) - I have also heard oak leaves work if you can't find...

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

Thanks. I do have a small piece of driftwood. I like the idea of some leaf litter but I am not fond of the look of brown tannins in the water. I have heard there are some health benefits from using them though. I wonder if just a couple would darken the water much.

    I think I hate snails

I have about a gazillion MTS in my 10gal...I really don't want that many...but here's the thing, I really hate killing any type of animal, even snails. I guess I just have to deal with the glass and plants being covered in them

    33 gallon long stocking suggestions?

Ok so my tank has been fully cycled for about a week and I'm ready to add fish but can't decide what I want. I need some good algae eater suggestions as well - algae is trying to take over while plants begin to take hold. All fish need to be plant and shrimp-compatible. Thinking of doing a...

    Best options for lowering pH?

Thanks everyone for all your help! I appreciate it. No fish in that tank yet - it's still cycling. All I have is MTS there cause they're impossible to kill anyways. I haven't fully decided what I want yet when it comes to fish. May make another thread do suggestions if I can't decide by the...

    Best options for lowering pH?

Hmm that's a good question. All they gave me was a slip of paper that has the numbers, not the unit of measurement. The woman said my water was weird because 20GH was low and 150KH was quite high. I may have to call them when they reopen tomorrow and ask what units they use.

Okay so I decided to go to the city today - got the tapwater tests done. GH is 20, KH is 150.

    Best options for lowering pH?

Hmm, looks like I'll have to wait until I can go to the city then. I can try to ask my landlord in the meantime but idk if he will get back to me.

    It's been a long time

Thank you for the informative and diplomatic answer. I agree that I would not want beginners to get the wrong message regarding these subjects...I've been out of the game for a long time - kind-of became a forum "recluse" - things seem to have changed since I was last active. All my books are...
