Long Time Fishkeeper With Newbie Problem

Ok, I have had 75g and 40g mbuna tanks for 5+ years. Was a regular here for several years. I know about cycling. I preached cycling for years. Yesterday, all of the fish in the 40g started coming to the surface, gasping for "breath". I tested and there had been a Nitrite spike to about 2.5ppm...

    Fish Game #34

Rules: 1: The person who starts the game (the games master) thinks of a fish and posts a small clue as to the type of fish it is. After 3 guesses he/she should post a new clue. 2: No one may ask 2 questions in a row. After a question has been asked you must wait until someone else has asked a...

    Modernhamlet's 40g High-tech Planted Journal

This thread will serve as the aqua-journal for a 40 gallon high-tech planted tank now residing in my dining room. The initial goal is a nature aquarium influenced triangular layout inspired by the seacoast of the Pacific Northwest US. I will describe the process and add specific plant and fish...

    Worried About Water Chemistry

After all sorts of hardware hurdles, I will finally have my tank up and running this weekend. However, I have one last major issue to figure out. Here are the major facts that have me worried: 1. Tapwater parameters[/b] pH: >9 (no, seriously) KH: 2 GH: 1 2. I'm going to be using presssurized...

    Xp2 Filter Issue

Has anyone had trouble getting their Filstar XP filter to run? Every time I prime my brand new XP2, it fills up almost completely, as you would expect. But once I plug it in, it will not pump water in or out of the tank. The impeller is clearly working fine and pumping water. Problem is, it's...

    Plant Selection

First of all, thanks to everyone that has helped me thusfar with equipment decisions on my 40g. Things are progressing well and baring a major malfunction, I'll be able to add life very soon. Which brings me to the scariest part of this process for me, the plants. There are hundreds of...

    Inch/gallon Guideline

I'm just curious how often people follow the 1" per gallon guideline and how that relates to their experience level. Please answer honestly.

    75g Mbuna (dialup warning)

Here are some pictures of my 75g mbuna tank. I hope you enjoy them. This is the first time I've had reliable access to a digital camera since I got into the hobby, so apologies if they aren't the best shots. First, the whole tank Anasazi, the tank boss The male yellow lab Girl's Night...

    Inpaichthys kerri

Does anyone have experience keeping these fish? My understanding is that they do best in small schools with only 1 or 2 males. What ratios have people had luck with? I'm also curious how they do with fry, specifically apisto fry. The last thing I want is a little group of fry hunters scouring...

    Preliminary planted tank plan

I've been reading and thinking and planning and reading some more for the last couple of months... pretty much absorbing all of the planted tank material available here and elsewhere on the net. With a recent move finally finished, I'm just about ready to dive into the planted tank pool. Even...

    Apistogramma tankmates

I'm trying to work out a stocking plan for a 40g breeder tank that will be heavily planted and contain a trio of an as of yet undecided apistogramma species that I would like to have spawn and raise fry in the tank. I was going to go with a pencilfish species, but they have a tendency to be...

    75g move

So after moving 2 apartments into 1 new apartment across town on Friday and then attending a wedding (getting no sleep of course) over the weekend, Monday was fish moving day. Yes, they got a day all to themselves. Thankfully the move went off more or less without a hitch. 75g tank, stand...

    Catching Mbuna Fry

I just spent about 2.5 hours trying to catch the fry living and hiding in my 75g, in preparation for a move. I have a growout tank setup for them and would like to have them all there so I can not worry about them and focus on getting the adults rehomed quickly and safely. Plus I'd like to get a...

    Holding already?

One of the Pseudotropheus sp. "Msobo" in my tank is looking and acting EXACTLY like a holding female. Problem is, all 6 of them are still the bright yellow orange of juveniles and females. Only two of them are showing even the slightest hint of blue coming into their dorsal fin. When they are...

    The little ones have arrived

They're so little right now, but incredibly adorable. Just spent the morning acclimating them. 26 fish shipped, no DOAs, all in great shape and active. Definitely very high quality fish. But SO TINY! And the 75g just makes them look that much smaller. They'll grow into it of course. :D Anyway...
