yea you could use pretty much anything that wont be dangerous to the fish and water pvc piping is fine, plant pots, I even use small plastic bonsai tree pots and the fish love em!

@ plumbersmerchant most fish like hiding places, whatever species they are which can be by rocks, caves plants etc it helps them feel calm and secure. Some fish like the malawi mbuna must have rocks and caves as their natural environment has only rocks etc and @ bullit youre right they look out...
