Only problem with that Fern is that I have found out my LFS sold it to me even though it isn't an aquatic plant!   They live in Marsh and will die within weeks of being submerged. They are called Selaginella wildenowii.

Do you mean the very bottom layer under the blue sponge as the very top layer wouldn't be above the blue sponge but above the carbon sponge (or white sponge if I remove the carbon). Sorry just got a little confused there.

Update....   Looking on the Eheim website it gives details of the approx size of auarium and the max size of aquarium.  The Approx size of aquarium for use with the 600 is 180 litres so I am thinking that will be spot on for a 165 litre tank.

I have been using a siphon for 5 years and never once sucked a fish up.  I think it would be a major job to try and get them all out of the tank anyway and is way OTT to do every few weeks!  Just be carefull and keep the vac close to the gravel.

The CO2 has only been in a few days and am turning it up slightly each day to try and stabilise the levels but the indicator is still blue at the moment. In reply to the spray bar suggestion you can't be farmiliar with the AquaOne filtration system.

It shouldn't have dies from the phosphate levels as its not harmful to fish but encourages algae. I personally think that because it was so young and small it didn't handle the white spot treatment well or recovering from white spot or perhaps the change in water chemistry and drop in salt...

Thanks for that info. He is doing fine in the other tank and set about cleaning all the silicone round the tank and isn't causing any problems with any of the other fish so I think he is going to stay. The LFS often get them in of all sizes so I will keep my eye out.
