Wouldnt have considered that, for a goldfish. I don't let my tropical tank go much over that, but never had issues with 20-40ppm in a coldwater. If it starts heading for 40, I change.

Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, Nitrate 10-20ppm. Test kits (liquid+ test tube, not strips) are still in date, although I do have new ones coming for nitrite and ammonia. A large 50% water change was done yesterday, and that followed a 30% one from a few days previously. Still just the one loach...

Yes I'm sorry for the blurring but unless I nail the fish down to a bench to take the photo, it's kind of difficult. I've already processed the photos with unsharp mask in Gimp to try and help with that. I might have another go later on...photographing, that is....

I have fairly hard water so nutrients should be there. Just reached dose 4 in the instructions...the ammonia level drops well (but not yet to zero in 24hrs), nitrites likewise...they,re readable (currently about 2+). But it seems to be going OK since the water change so hopefully it won't be...

Thanks for that one, Gruntle, useful to know what other people have seen with nitrates. Well, last night I did a 30% change (give or take a few pints) and this morning the nitrates are around the 40 mark, with nitrites somewhere around 2...the tube doesn't look quite as strong a psychedelic...

Amano shrimps are, I always thought, more for a tropical tank than a goldfish one.....but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. You say your shrimp became more lively when you added loaches....not surprised, I'd be frightened to death if I was the shrimp. I cannot say from first-hand experience...

Although it's only me answering my own post, thought I'd quickly post this here for info and update. A day or so after my last post, my loach started exhibiting signs of having gill flukes. Lots of "yawning" and suspicious-looking redness inside the gills was observed. Took a chance and started...
