24 hours; how critical is this?

I was hoping so, too. It's been bordering on success for a few days now. I shall look forward to getting them moved (but not to cleaning their old tank out! :( ).

24 hours; how critical is this?

I'm bringing an old "retired" tank back into use and have been doing a fishless cycle for the past 35 days. Now, I have done a few of these before, so you'd think I should know the answer....but I am finding that my ammonia and nitrite readings are reaching zero together, but in about 30 hours...

Thanks for the inputs, any further ones I hope to be back online later. All appreciated.

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

The bobbing to the top isn't persistent, minute by minute; it's less than that, but still puzzling. Water parameters don't suggest anything but I have changed the water a lot over the past week. The ONLY thing I can think of...and it's just come to me this morning...is the possibility that the...

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

That is how I would calculate it, yes. It is not unusual for our tap water to have a low nitrate reading; most times it is zero, but springtime I have noticed that, for whatever reason, it rises a little bit. Never been a problem, though. Goldfish still passing stringy droppings, with occasional...

    That's reading 0-5ppm.

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

Wouldnt have considered that, for a goldfish. I don't let my tropical tank go much over that, but never had issues with 20-40ppm in a coldwater. If it starts heading for 40, I change.

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, Nitrate 10-20ppm. Test kits (liquid+ test tube, not strips) are still in date, although I do have new ones coming for nitrite and ammonia. A large 50% water change was done yesterday, and that followed a 30% one from a few days previously. Still just the one loach...

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

Just a little update. Not much change in goldfish behaviour, now on more "greens" and passing thinner strings. Haven't fed much flake. However....one of the loaches yesterday exhibited red sores on the bases of its front fins and also small red inflammation patches behind each gill. I then...

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

Had given up hope of an answer....but thanks. I'm planning a second water change tomorrow, as it happens. Dont know what to do with the [at]Colin thing, though....is it an email? Fish is about the same, reasonably perky but still loafing on the bottom after brief swim-around and a bit of...

Goldfish bobbing out of the water

Been a long time since I was here....fish have been doing well! But I have a puzzle now. My old goldfish has been slouching in the tank corner, seemingly a bit constipated. He's on day two of a very light diet of shelled pea, just in case. But every so often he gets up and makes a dash for the...

    Lump on leopard danio tail

I think the lump has been there for a couple of weeks; it must have been very tiny to start with; I didnt notice it straight away. I'll look for a general purpose treatment as you say...there's no over-the-counter antibiotics here. If it's a tumour, don't know what will handle that (nothing...

    Lump on leopard danio tail

I think my camera has a continual shot mode, I'll need to find it....I'm not much of a photographer, I'm afraid. Here's another one, but I'll keep trying...will try and post later.

    Lump on leopard danio tail

Yes I'm sorry for the blurring but unless I nail the fish down to a bench to take the photo, it's kind of difficult. I've already processed the photos with unsharp mask in Gimp to try and help with that. I might have another go later on...photographing, that is....

    Lump on leopard danio tail

Long time since posting....fish have been well. I have six leopard danios in my 100 litre tank, along with eight rasboras and a couple of old neon tetras. The leopards have been very well but I have now found one with a small pink lump towards the base of the tail and a slight degree of fin...

    ?Crashed cycle but normal parameters

The heaters I've come across from aqua-suppliers all seem to be only 100 or 200 watts. Perhaps you or someone could recommend a brand/ higher-rated piece of equipment.

    ?Crashed cycle but normal parameters

Thanks for the reply. I have recently put in a heater, but I only have one available at present, it's a Fluval 200Watt...not enough really for such a big tank. I don't have the thing switched on all the time, only when putting water in/afterwards for a while. It's set at 20 degrees C. Chlorine...

    ?Crashed cycle but normal parameters

Typical, this happening during the Christmas holiday. My 350 litre coldwater tank has been running perfectly since June. Four or five days ago I treated the large goldfish for what looked like a rash on his front fins, that can often lead to finrot. (Interpet Anti-fungus/finrot). The rash...

Almost cycled, ?need for 3ppm doses

The fish stock will not be large in numbers at this time;, they are one goldfish (him on the left) and a couple of young weather-loaches. They live in a smaller tank right now, but need more space, hence the new tank purchase. In time (when Goldie is no longer with us) I'll plan new fish.....but...

Almost cycled, ?need for 3ppm doses

My new big tank is almost cycled; the ammonia has dropped to zero in 24 hours after each of the 3ppm doses 6, 7 and 8 but the nitrites have continued to lag....until today (my Day 28) where I recorded 0.25ppm after 24 hours......so a-l-m-o-s-t there but technically not quite. Thing is now...

    Nevada Stone in aquarium

I've picked up some modest sized pieces of off-white Nevada stone from a local Pets@Home, but at the moment I can't find out what Nevada stone actually is....search engines not helpful right now. I know there is a rocks discussion in some old threads but I didn't see this particular one...

    Will medium-high nitrates stall cycle?

I have fairly hard water so nutrients should be there. Just reached dose 4 in the instructions...the ammonia level drops well (but not yet to zero in 24hrs), nitrites likewise...they,re readable (currently about 2+). But it seems to be going OK since the water change so hopefully it won't be...

    Will medium-high nitrates stall cycle?

Thanks for that one, Gruntle, useful to know what other people have seen with nitrates. Well, last night I did a 30% change (give or take a few pints) and this morning the nitrates are around the 40 mark, with nitrites somewhere around 2...the tube doesn't look quite as strong a psychedelic...

    Will medium-high nitrates stall cycle?

    Will medium-high nitrates stall cycle?

What a week...crashed computer (I'm on a borrowed one) and now possibly a fishless cycle problem as well. I was going to move my fish immediately into a new 5 foot tank, from their old one, along with all current filter media; but for reasons too complicated to put on here, I am now doing a...

    Fantail fish tank mates

Amano shrimps are, I always thought, more for a tropical tank than a goldfish one.....but someone will correct me if I'm wrong. You say your shrimp became more lively when you added loaches....not surprised, I'd be frightened to death if I was the shrimp. I cannot say from first-hand experience...

Thanks essjay, that sounds very workable. I'm not wanting to rush the move but thought it would be good to take advantage of having fully-functioning sponges, etc.

Seeding new filter with current media

I am shortly going to be setting up a new 5-foot (1.5m) 360 litre coldwater tank for my old goldfish and a few weather-loaches. They will be moving from their 180 litre tank, and I plan to use some of the media from their Fluval 206 filter to seed the new, larger 406 Fluval. Now, normally I...

    Fish Has Totally Vanished

That was my thought, too....but heck, they must have been hungry! I do not recall seeing him on Sunday, but never really thought to look more closely, since he had been alive and moving around a little bit (like a flounder) the night before. It's like having a set of vultures....yes I hope he's...

    Fish Has Totally Vanished

Have been off the forum for a long time, just busy with the stuff of life (including fish)....however I am currently experiencing a "Star Trek transporter" effect with my gourami....he's gone. 20 gallon tank (UK), six copper harlequins, seven neons; a few cherry shrimp, a lot of small pond...

Weather Loach Lethargic, On Side (Coldwater)

Although it's only me answering my own post, thought I'd quickly post this here for info and update. A day or so after my last post, my loach started exhibiting signs of having gill flukes. Lots of "yawning" and suspicious-looking redness inside the gills was observed. Took a chance and started...
