    What Is This Black Stuff?

I think I'll do that through the week then, I'll soak it in the bleach mix for a few hours, boil it for an hour and then soak in dechlorinated water before letting it air dry. Thanks for the advice.   Although not to deter anyone else from giving a definite answer on what the stuff actually is haha

    What Is This Black Stuff?

Yeah I can't tilt the ornament, if it isn't placed in the substrate firmly it tips over >.< I'll sort that as soon I can either get hold of a drill or just replace the damn thing lol   As for the algae, I read about bleaching the fake plants/ornaments in 1 part bleach to 19 parts water along...

    What Is This Black Stuff?

The tank has been set up for roughly 6 months. I did a 30% water change on Wednesday. The 0.25ppm of ammonia isn't anything to worry about, I know why it's there. Basically I have a large hollow ornament in the tank which is quite heavy and causes the sand to impact, also with it being hollow...

    What Is This Black Stuff?

Hey all,   some black stuff I can't identify has started growing in my tank. I've googled all sorts of "black algae" but it looks nothing like any of the pictures that come up.   It started just on the fake plants, although it was isolated to the green parts (it doesn't grow on any of the...

    New Centerpiece Fish

Hey all, My 100L tank currently contains:   4 platys 10 neon tetras 4 bronze corydoras 1 bristlenose pleco 2 assassin snails (were introduced simply to take care of a pest snail problem I had) 1 betta   Basically as the tetras have grown they have started to nip on the bettas tail so I've...

    Tank Has Uncycled?

Oh ok, yeah I wasn't worried about the 0.25 ammonia, it was the low nitrate that concerned me really. Thanks for clearing that up :)

    Tank Has Uncycled?

Hey all, A few weeks back I posted about how to change filter as my previous one had gotten extremely loud to the point it could be heard in other rooms. Anyway I bought a new filter (Fluval U2) and did as instructed with changing. I took the media from the old filter and packed every bit of it...

    How To Change Filter?

I change 2 of the 4 cartridges every 3-4 weeks and clean the rest of the filter (casing etc) about every 6 weeks. However, I know this isn't anything to do with it being dirty because the noise started the last time I disassembled it for cleaning :P I'm assuming I've been heavy handed with it...

    How To Change Filter?

These are the cartridges in my current filter: http://pet.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pPETS-7800634t300x300.jpg   As you can see (a little in the pic), they have plastic running through them so can't really be cut to shape into other filters >.<

    How To Change Filter?

Hey guys and gals,   Basically my filter is driving me bonkers with the noise. When we bought it (it came with the tank) we had read that it could be a little loud but at first that wasn't our experience as it was so silent, however now it's horrifically loud. The tank is in our bedroom and is...

    Snail Overload! What To Do?

Yeah my girlfriend was reading about them yesterday and mentioned they burrow a lot for purposes of sleeping and hunting under the substrate. We have sand rather than gravel though :)

    32 Litre Stocking Help?

I don't know if it applies to ghost shrimp but I had red cherry shrimp and my betta ate all of them >.<

    Snail Overload! What To Do?

Hey guys, read all your posts and yesterday we were by PetsAtHome so we picked up a couple of Assassin Snails :), they were more expensive in PaH than I would have preferred to pay but I was nowhere near the cheaper LFS. They look pretty awesome tbh, but I read it's pretty normal for them to...

    Snail Overload! What To Do?

Hey guys, So about 7 weeks ago we bought some new plants for our tank and in one of the plants we discovered a stowaway in the form of a snail (no idea what type). Anyway, we didn't think much of it as it was just the one snail, but now there are at least 8 that we have counted with new ones...

    Goldfish Tank Trouble

It's not a case of the fish dying due to ammonia or anything. It is an established pond and he would fit in great there. The problem is the temp change. The fish would be going from a constant 25oC water to a maximum of 10oC through the day and colder at night so even a long acclimation would...

    Goldfish Tank Trouble

Hey all, About 5 years ago I got a goldfish in a 25L tank at first he was fine etc. About 18 months ago I finished university and went travelling so I gave the tank and the fish to my grandparents. Today I've just been to visit my grandparents and the fish is huge! Like stupidly big compared to...

Odd Cory Behavior. Should I Be Worried?

What bacteria causes this exactly? And how does it end up in ones tank?

Odd Cory Behavior. Should I Be Worried?

Melafix was the product, but when I got to the store he said exactly what you said about how it helps with fin rot but doesn't kill the bacteria. Instead he suggested a different product called "eSHa 2000" which is what I'm using now.    Thanks :)

Odd Cory Behavior. Should I Be Worried?

Hey all,   So 2 of the corys are fine now. However the other 2 appear to have developed fin rot. As we established before, they were all stressed due to the ammonia spike but now the 2 that are fine are the larger and stronger of the cory group and it's the smaller 2 that are affected by this...

    Newbie To Planting, Need Help

I asked in the LFS about that and I told I had nothing to tie it to and he said he has them in his tanks all year round just in the substrate? If it does rot how long will that take? I don't wanna take it out but currently I have nothing to tie it to so I'm wondering what I can get to tie it...
