Leaf litter: can I use these?

I've recently bought a house with a nice garden, and plenty of plants. I was wondering if I can use their leaves for my new discus tank as leaf litter. In particular: apple pear nashi cherry almond magnolia black and red currant blueberry plum kaki (persimmon) The trees are not sprayed with...

    Acrylic tank and ancistrus?

I really can't justify a small acrylic tank as an experiment. I already have nine aquariums in the house, four of which are set up. I do have a small acrylic one, but it's full of freshwater shrimps at the moment. I have had a largeish reef before (550 litres) plus a couple of smaller ones (90...

    Acrylic tank and ancistrus?

Thank you :) Don't worry I'm also planning an acrylic reef, and that will need some care when cleaning! This discus tank will be a cakewalk in comparison! :D Agreed, but still, you need to hit it hard enough, and a 220x60cm panel will have to have quite a bit of thickness plus bracing, so...

    Acrylic tank and ancistrus?

I'm planning a largeish tank, and I would like it to be acrylic. The price is not really relevant, I've had glass and acrylic quoted and they're close enough at this size to make no real difference. I'd rather avoid glass because it's going to be easier to manoeuvre a 70Kg tank than a 200Kg...

    Looking for suggestions for nanofish

You'd be surprised. Recently I found an extra tiny ember tetra in the tank with the rams that I definitely did not buy. What about boraras, pearl danios or emerald rasboras? Consider I'm not looking for a breeding project, just enough to keep the population self-sustaining, at least partially...

    Looking for suggestions for nanofish

Ph 7.5 Gh 18 Kh 7 It's not a big issue though. I have plenty of experience changing water parameters, and a 200gpd RO filter. With a planned 800 litre reef and 800 litre discus tank, you have to be ready with plenty of RO, so of course the smaller tanks will benefit too. (and I have a 120 litre...

    Looking for suggestions for nanofish

Yeah, so respectively 2.6 and about 4.5 cm. males might be close enough, but females are way bigger than I'm looking for, and my understanding is that there should many more females than males, no?

    Looking for suggestions for nanofish

I had thought of endlers, but they're not exactly schooling, are they? Hardly shoaling even... Also are they that small? Never actually seen any, or maybe I did see them and ignored them completely as I might have been looking for something else, but I'm under the impression they're well over...

    Looking for suggestions for nanofish

I have a 50 litre planted tank that is set up and running. CO2 is set up, but not currently being used. Used to have shrimps in there, but the room will have a large discus tank in the near future, so shrimps (crs at least) are no longer reasonable due to the room's temperature. So, I'm...

    Found an extra ember tetra

Ember tetras aren't livebearers, they're egg scatterers.

    Found an extra ember tetra

Looks like my embers spawned, and one survived. This morning I spotted one in the shoal that is far too small to have been bought with the others. I wonder if there are more hiding in the thick foliage, or in the tangle of anubias roots.

Anyone run a freshwater surface skimmer?

Have you considered sumping your tank though? You would increase water volume, get your surface skimming, increase the filtration potential and remove all the equipment from the display tank. You can get some excellent overflow boxes that work fine (have one on my 54 litre marine shrimp tank)...

Anyone run a freshwater surface skimmer?

That's one of the reasons I prefer to have sumped tanks (even my 30 litre one!). Had floating plants on one of mine, and kept them corralled with a loop of airline floating on the surface.

    Water syphon for tall aquarium

Would you believe that my discus tank never got syphoned in the five years I had it set up? Just had a team of corys and bristlenoses to keep the dirt suspended until it got sucked into the overflow. The discus even successfully bred in that community tank. Once the root system of the pothos...

    Litter on tank substrate

Thanks for that info. Do you know anything about hazelnuts or almonds?

    Litter on tank substrate

I have a list of safe leaves I can litter the bottom of my discus community tank I can collect in nature where I know it is clean. I also have a stock of alder cones and are planning to add those too. I was wondering if walnut and hazelnut shells can also be added for variety, provided I know...

    Question about fiddler crabs

Now that my vampire crabs are almost died out (only one left), I was thinking of setting up the tank for fiddler crabs. If possible, though, I'd rather not rescape it completely. The tank is 80cm by 30cm base. one quarter of it is water, about 6cm deep. There is a sloping "drywall" of stones...
