    Food for corys

I also got that recommendation from Ian Fuller regarding the tabs. A site I am also a member of. But, the recommendation is not in the US so-- I feed NLS food exclusively. It is an excellent prepared food. I feed three types of pellets and NLS Flake ( which they love as well) as a staple. I...

Online places to buy plants and fish?

I would say that the best place to buy fish and plants are at your local Aquarium society. If you live in a small town where meetings are not held, look to a bigger town close by that holds monthly Aquatic society meetings and auctions. You will get healthy home-bred fish at sometimes up to 1/2...

Suggest best plant substrate or gravel

Yes, barring the fish can handle lower KH and pH around 6.5 ish-- aquaspoil is entirely safe for fish. A big HOWEVER is that you must wait for leaching to stop. \ Shrimp are some of the most sensitive creatures we can put in our aquariums. Of my 4 shrimp aquariums, only 1 has inert soil- the...

Suggest best plant substrate or gravel

In 30 years of fish-keeping I have never seen this. Fish have a preference for substrate color? Ill tell that to my wild discus and wild eartheaters who are on white ( now slightly tan) sand. This color is all wrong for you- lol!

Suggest best plant substrate or gravel

An active substrate, such as ADA aquasoil or Controsoil, for example, is fine for fish that can take a lower pH and KH. However, you must properly "age" the tank prior to adding fish. It takes a commitment. When I start a tank with aquasoil ( which is bar none the best substrate to use for...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

He does. He believes his knowledge and his belief system is the end and the beginning to all discussions. This guy would NEVER admit to be wrong in the face of any counter to his belief system. If you look at what he writes, it is a healthy dose of rigid opinion, a spattering of science, and a...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

So, basically, it is your understanding that all substances outside of water and de-chloriantor ( I dont know, you may argue that's detrimental as well) added to the aquarium are harmful to fish. This is the "basic fish pathology" you are going on about? Um, okay. This sounds to me more like a...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

So, your argument is-- what? All fertilizer is detrimental to fish no matter what level of content? Or, aquatic fertilizers are fine but terrestrial fertilizers aren't. Your objective is getting fuzzier and fuzzier as we go on. Um- no one claiming to be an expert? No? Are you sure? You dis my...

Could you invite those scientific folks you know and rub elbows with to the forum so we can have a discussion?

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

I have seen alot of self-proclaimed "experts" like you over the years on fish forums. Same "MO"--- you could connect the dots with your predictability. You claim that your "theories" are based on some basic premises of science that others who question you just dont have a handle on in the same...

Oh brother. Another "because I said so response." Really, science is more rigorous than this...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

What evidence do you have for your claims? Again, lots of wagging the finger at others for "risking their fish" by using fertilizers, but no evidence to base these factoids on. Please, lets take it down a notch. Sure, if you do not do proper study/research on what you put into your aquarium...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

There are plenty of people who successfully use DIY fertilizer (with Osmocote, for example) without getting uncontrollable algae. I would advise looking at some forums that strictly deal in planted aquariums to get insight in how this can successfully be done.

    Sand as a substrate

I am very particular about the aesthetics of the substrate I use and am willing to put more money here and sacrifice in other areas when setting up an aquarium. When it comes to sand I use Caribsea. A consistently excellent product that allows me many different options to make my aquascape look...

    Beginner plants for non-soil tank?

For sustained growth, plants need fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium along with some micro-nutrients. In some situations, aquariums with higher bio-loads of fish supply adequate nitrogen and fish food ( containing phosphorous) are all that are needed to grow easy plants like java...
