    140g center brace down!

I think for the most part, it is not something fish keepers really need to know, someone (the manufacturer) did that thinking and worrying for you. Showing people numbers from a calculator hidden behind a black box might cause more concern than reassurance for people (never mind wet floors)...

    140g center brace down!

So it turns out the tank is only 110 gal, not sure how (or when) I got that mixed up. Measurements are 72x20x22", LxWxH, with 10mm glass all around. I ended up putting a 17" wide 6mm thick center brace because I had a piece laying around. It looks like a more solid tank with the wide brace and...

    140g center brace down!

I'm not a tank building expert though, so don't do what I do or take my advice, but feel free to watch

    140g center brace down!

Even without bracing filling to 18" on this tank (even with 9mm glass) should have an OK (above 3) safety factor (based on some charts and calculations) for bowing/bending failure. Maybe its not enough surface area for the lower silicone seal to handle the pressure but the glass should be OK...

    140g center brace down!

The plexiglass would probably be OK if you could bond it reliably to the glass. I'm not familiar with bonding to plexiglass, but I know glass on glass with acid cure silicone works and is forgiving to rework if needed.

    140g center brace down!

It is front to back, I remember reading that using the same thickness of glass would help to reduce stresses that could occur if you made too stiff a brace. Or breakages from one that's too weak. Just eyeballing with a tape measure the glass looks just under 3/8", I will get a set of calipers...

    140g center brace down!

Yea it is my old goldfish tank, has a few fish left. I started researching again yesterday, my tank is 6' long and 24" tall (water depth) and with 9mm (3/8 glass) is near the limit for what the glass can handle (I think its technically OK, but no company would ever sell one). Adding a center...

    140g center brace down!

Any tank builders here? I've got a 6' long with ~20" water depth made from what looks like 3/8" (probably 9mm) thick glass. The center brace silicone failed and the tank bowed out enough for it to fall in. It was a DIY or local build of some sort. Back when I bought it I had been researching...

Vacation, how long without feeding? Cardinal Tetras, small fish

Sweet, that's good news. I will start fattening them up and making sure the tanks extra clean. Thank you everyone for chiming in, appreciate it.

Vacation, how long without feeding? Cardinal Tetras, small fish

Will cardinals make it 2 weeks without feeding? The tank is planted and has Ramshorn snails but no other food sources. Strictly, $ wise, either they will be OK or I will just sell them off. I know bigger fish are fine with 2 weeks but what about small tetras and the like?

    An odd but pleasing project

I really like how it makes the background look and the fact its functional. It is like a self feeding planter and a water changeless tank potentially? If you get the right anaerobics going in the deep substrate, maybe. I'm gonna need to start looking for scrap glass to cut up

    Simple Refugium

In my desire to keep daphnia and hornwort in the same water as goldfish I came up with this idea and it's called a refugium apparently. You might have everything you need to set one up already. All you need is a container, a light source, some airline, a air stone and a pump running in you tank...

    Humans causing evolution

It is mad, maddening. The phrasing of the quote also makes me wonder what the proposed solution is exactly?? The tuskless elephants don't produce male offspring, therefor, eventually, no more elephants (if the trend of tusked elephants "disappearing" continues). Fingers crossed for the...

Goldfish laying at bottom of tank

Only certain substrates are sharp and cause issues, sounds like yours is OK. I wouldn't mess with things too much if you don't need to, less stress the better. It took maybe 2 months before improvements were noticed in my case. I'll be watching this thread to see what happens, hopefully you...

    Humans causing evolution

Imagine, if it could reproduce. Now imagine it happened thousands of years ago and its parent species are gone. We only look at mules and wonder where they came from. And we are able to trace it back by fossils to the time of horses and donkeys but we never find that mule in a horse womb fossil...

    Humans causing evolution

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mule The Mule is what I use to rationalize this question. Hypothetically, if the Mule was able to reproduce and it out competed (to extinction) its parent species would we say the parent species somehow "evolved" into the mule. Especially, if we had only broken and...

    Humans causing evolution

The key word is "mutation", the tusk less elephant is a MUTANT! and its taking over the world! There is no attempt at evolution by an organism, mutants are born and if that mutation is favorable for the current environment it stands a higher chance of continuing to exist. Enough mutations...

Goldfish laying at bottom of tank

I had almost the exact same thing happen, Nose bobbing down, laying, but still perking up for food time. You may need to change your fishes diet. They need less protein once they are older and more grown. Mine was being fed food that had expired! and it slowly took its toll on its health. The...

Did I just harm my fish more by trying to help?

I find it very handy to always have a bucket of "treated" water sitting around. Use it for cleaning filters. top ups, watering house plants, ect. Bonus, if your water is free of chloramines the water will condition itself over ~24 hours and should be safe to use.

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

I have no doubt canines could live on some plant based diet. After much study (generations), scientists could throw it together. All the nutrients (in the right ratios), easily digested, low stress long life kinda food. But what that recipe would actually look like and what processing would be...
