    Blackwater Aquariums

As Colin noted, it can actually help control algae. Blackwater is not necessary for many fish - but some do really well in it. I would start looking for fish that prefer a blackwater environment and then figure out how to recreate it if need be. I have a tank that would be considered blackwater...

    Say It Aint So

I've dug into this a bit - I don't believe it's the culprit, but it's good to know about this condition. I've only ever seen "velvet" on fish such as black mollies. It looks like out of 20-25 fry, we have two survivors who are eating and swimming normally, but showing remnants of the extra...

    Say It Aint So

I do not add anything else to the water. They are fed BBS and a commercial product called "Golden Pearls" Size 6 - which are both foods I have used before and am using in other tanks, such as the tank with Cockatoo fry in it and the second tank of Kribensis fry. Fry are about 1/2 inch long. On...

    Say It Aint So

Sorry you've experienced that. I believe that my situation is much different though - so I'm hoping to figure out what I am doing incorrectly.

    Say It Aint So

I can't believe I'm writing this. An unknown killer has again killed my fish and I'm getting ready to throw in the towel on my breeding operations. Here is what just happened and at the end of this post, I'll share links to this EXACT same thing occurring to other species of fish in other tanks...

    Cichlid Growth Rates

Doing that large of a water change, I'm assuming that you heated the water first?

    Cichlid Growth Rates

I usually do BBS and as they get bigger, commercial growth pellet and once they hit the right size, live daphnia, adult BS and bloodworms etc. I feel like I'm doing "everything right" and the growth rate of my other fry would indicate that I am - but the cockatoos sometimes make me wonder if...

    Cichlid Growth Rates

My cockatoos do not grow that fast. Clearly it must be something that I am doing. What did you feed them at that stage?

    Where's Byron?

@Byron I knew that you had cancer but was not aware of the terminal diagnosis. As someone who has first-hand witnessed medical miracles (sky-diver shoot did not open up, survived; man beaten almost to death and fully healed 1 day later) I will be praying that, even if you do not believe in God...

Favourite rift lake cichlid and why?

It's hard to say any one for sure, but I have always loved Neolamprologus Brichardi - beautiful color, fins and their nuclear family structure where batches of fry care for the next batch etc.

    Cichlid Growth Rates

After raising several batches of cichlid fry from both Ram Cichlids and Apistogramma (Cockatoos) and now fry from F1 Kribensis, it is very apparent that cockatoo fry grow slow as molasses. My F1 krib fry are a month younger and just as large or larger than 2 month old cockatoo fry. My Ram...

    P. Kribensis "Moliwe"

Good catch, I don't know what I was thinking! Corrected! I don't think I can agree here. There are some very beautiful SA Cichlids - some of my favorites are apistogramma, firemouths, discus, angelfish etc. There is much more diversity than you might imagine. We just don't see a lot in the trade.

    P. Kribensis "Moliwe"

What you have is Pelvicachromis Pulcher - which is your common "krib". The ones that I am breeding are Pelvicachromis Kibensis "Moliwe" - which is a geographically specific variant. Here's picture (not mine, but mine look identical). "Female" "Male"

The Wet Spot just added something I HATE!

The DOA did not apply if shipping was delayed; the insurance does. Not sure if you were aware of that or not.

The Wet Spot just added something I HATE!

I'll echo what others said, which is not something you agree with. Their selection is literally second to none and their pricing is, in my opinion, extremely fair. They do a phenomenal job packaging their fish (I did not have a DOA when I ordered 6 fish in the middle of winter) and shipping is...

    P. Kribensis "Moliwe"

Thanks, @Colin_T ! One fry escaped me for a couple of days - and mom/dad did an excellent job. I don't think I've ever seen a fish fry follow it's mom so closely. I suspect she's going to lay again today, so I am undecided if I will pull them or not. I have been so busy lately, but I would...

    P. Kribensis "Moliwe"

Update: I've got about 20 or so fry from them. They became free-swimming a week ago. I removed them (want to protect my investment incase they eat their fry and then "bite it") immediately and set them up in a 20g with the tank temp at 84F to help accelerate growth. I am feeding them BBS 2-3x a...
