Sorry about the typo. N2 should have been NO2.
Distilled water was used initially but I changed to tap and de-chlorinator when we moved the fish to the little tank.
Am I wrong in assuming I could keep a 1.5" fish in a 3 gallon tank until it got a little bigger?
Since I have very little practical experience with fish keeping, I assume the obvious answer to the question is... me. However, I'd like to learn from this experiance if at all possible and maybe prevent something like this from happening in the future.
Long story short...
My wife won the...
Sunday I drained about 3/4 of the water, cleaned the gunk that came from the sand, and added some plants and stuff. I went through 2 buckets before hooking the siphon pump and a hose to the sink. You guys are right the buckets are just a PIA.
The tank is 36"x18"x24". Oak stand, oak hood.
The hood is big but it goes off and on easy enough. I assume your 55 gallon is longer which would make it harder to deal with I'm sure. I'm already tired of taking mine on and off. It's a pain but the look is certainly worth it. I shouldn't have...
Thanks for the heads up DL. While I realized that the fish might grow much larger, I had assumed I could keep it in the current tank until he gets a little bigger. I'm not sure this fish requires a much larger tank just yet.

I've read that it was too hard for plecos. As I have zero experience with this fish stuff, I have to take peoples word on stuff like this.
It seems like the jury might still be out on this one though.
It's better to have a dirty lens than a scratched one. If taken care of, you should hardly ever have to clean your lenses. I use a blower, a brush, a lens pen, and a micro fiber cloth.
Since my fishless cycle is off and running I've been thinking about stocking. I tested my tap water and I'm wondering if it limits my choices in any way.

I found an online version of the water quality report the city sent me...
I'm using the black stuff. I love the way it looks. This morning there was a marked reduction in the film on the top of the water. There are still lots of very tiny bubbles that cloud the water a bit but the water is slowly clearing and seems to get better every day.
I'm not sure if there are other brands of Tahitian Moon Sand but the stuff I got is expensive and nasty.
I spent two hours Sunday washing it in buckets in the backyard. After putting it in the tank it left a oily ring around the water line and the water is still cloudy almost two days later...
I stopped on the way home from work last night and grabbed a bottle of ammonia. There were other bottles that foamed when I shook them. This one does not.
I'm a little concerned about what the "quality control agents" are but I think I'm good with this stuff.
When I got home there were a...
