    I agree that you should skip the betta. Danios are not good tank mates for them. Your danios will school loosely since they are all the same species. They won't care that they are different colors.

    I use pool filter sand in 2 tanks. It's really cheap and the grain size is a bit larger than play sand, so it's quite easy to clean. Basically, you just need to stir up the "gunk" and then use your gravel vac to suck it out of the tank. I once bought some Estes black sand... it looked nice...
