If your test is the API one I think grey, along with green and going back to blue after being purple all means that the nitirite is off the scale the test measures. FIshy55.

Shred, Thanks for your reply. I have done as you suggested and have removed the shrimps and snail from the tank and put into a bucket, along with a bit of bogwood that never made it into the tank once I took everything out at the end of the fishless cycle so it had never come into contact with...

As I understand it, you have a designated hour in each 24 hour period when you top up the ammonia to 3-5ppm, but only do this if the previous dose has dropped to nil or close to nil. Obviously it is up to you how ofter you test, I would say go onto 12 hour tests once you ammonia is 0 at the 24...
