ok thanks, will carry on with the cycle then :)
also just wondering how long the bacteria that you do build up would survive if you stopped putting ammonia in?
so at the end of the cycle the ammonia levels reached zero and you put in the fish say 3-4 days later would the bacteria have survived...
I got my tank and started doing a fishless cycle with the "add & wait" method as recommended in this forum.
Have spent the last week or 2 doing it but I went in my local fish shop today and told them about the fishless cycle i was doing, the owners of the shop raised their eyebrows a little...
ahh thanks for this info, good to know :)
so when u do a water change you should always treat the new water in a seperate bucket before adding the new water in to the tank?
or would it be ok to tip stresscoat straight in to the tank once i have fish?
ok thanks guys will do a water change, i have some stresscoat, should I add the stresscoat to the new water and then put the new water in?
or just add the stresscoat straight in to the the tank itself.
It should kill the chlorine right, but wont it reduce the amonia too much as well??
Hey,
So i set up my tank and started the fishless cycle a few days ago as described in the forum. I hadnt yet recieved my test kit but thought I would add 2ml of ammonia to get it started.
A couple of days later I also added another 1ml of ammonia.
Now my master test kit has arrived almost a...
ok cheers, well its difficult to do the "add and wait" method cause i dont have my test kit yet, but I will just add 2ml now and see what the reading is when i get my tester in a few days :P
just got my new tank set up and need to start my fishless cycle, I have ordered a master test kit which should arrive in a few days.
I bought some ammonia today and for those of you from the UK, you can probably tell me if this stuff is ok? its jsut household ammonia from boots:

ok i have ordered the API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT, was just £20 on ebay. will buy the ammonia from boots tomorrow and get the cycle going.
thanks for all your advice guys!
was having a look at the test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and hardness, and the liquid test kits are £9 each.....do I really need all 5 of those?
I noticed some cheaper options like the "master test kit" here:
My link
or the "6 in 1" strips here:

would those be ok options?
ok have set it up now, i must confess I am dissapointed, it is smaller than expected, and i thought the whole point in the biube tanks were that the cables could be neat and therefore give a more elegant look to the tank, but with the light and heater there are cables everywhere and no way to...
ok thanks will prob get 6 tetras, and could you suggest 1 other fish that isn't a schooling fish that i could put in also? what about a 2.5" silver shark? is 1 small angelfish definately out of the question? i read somehwhere that they prefer tall tanks
my tank has just arrived so...
thanks for all the replies guys, argh! it looks like ive chosen the wrong tank :( i just really liked the style of it.
well maybe its best i start off with something smallish, could i get away with say 6 tetras and 2 barbs?? or are there a couple of fish a bit larger that dont need much space...
hi, im a noob!
i once tried keeping tropical fish many years ago but found that they kept dying all the time :( the water became very dirty with just a few days of cleaning, i dont know if the filter was faulty or something.
Anyway have decided to give it another shot, i have just ordered a...
