White Hair Algae?

I will start at the beginning. A couple of weeks ago we went on holiday and left our tank in the care of my grandad. I think he may have over fed the fish, and there were 2 deaths. He has kept tropicals before but it also could have been my grandmother (who knows nothing about fish) who over fed them. when we came back the tank was in a state, its all ok now exept i have a wierd growth on some of my plants, and it's spreading. Its kinda whitey grey and its hairy, i will get pics later when i get home. Sound about right?

Possibly staghorn algae, it loves things if your fish are overfed and/or too much mulm etc in the gravel/filter.
