Are UV Sterilisers any good for killing algae in planted freshwater tanks?

As far as I know, no. They sterilise the water, but algae grow from airborne spores and grow on the nitrates in the water. What the uv sterilisers do is kill the bacteria in the water that flows in them.

I'm not saying they are useless, but in my opinion their real utility is a bit limited.

I found it helps keep algae at bay so long as its a decent wattage uv light hence, why my next ftwts i will be looking at getting uv again!!
