Hey! So if I have platies and swordtails in a tank will they easily crossbreed?  I know they are closely related, but if I have a male of their species will they only want to breed with him?

all livebearers can crossbreed but will prefer there own kind so it would be advisable to have males of one and females of the other i dont know which one is more likely to try and breed with the other you would have to ask a specialist about that

Swordtails and platies in the hobby today are very intermixed... which is why you'll see 'red wag' platies and 'red wag' swords... or 'mickey mouse' platies and 'mickey mouse' swords...

So, essentially, if you have both in the same tank, expect some mixing to take place.

This is a bit of an overgeneralization...

Mollies and guppies can crossbreed I know that. I know that platies and swordtails can, but I don't know if they would do that on their own or I need to have only males of one species and females of the other.

Edit:  All live bearers can not crossbreed.  They have to be a part of the same livebearer family.

I find that male livebearers will breed with any fish that they can.

It's a common misconception - that they can ALL interbreed.  They can breed within the same genus, but not beyond that.  Swords and platies are the same genus, but mollys and guppies are a different genus from them.

The platies and swordtails will crossbreed but they will most likely only breed with another of their specific breed if that option is available.
