Suitable Rocks For Tropical Fish Tanks?

I'm going to give up on plants in my tank as i'm really struggling to keep them alive so I need a quantity of rocks/stones/slate etc.
Question is, are any old stones/rocks suitable?

The rocks in fish shops seem very expensive for what they are, can I just go to my local DIY shop and buy theirs?

Has anyone (near me in Hants) got any they want to get rid of?
