I will be getting a 38 and a 29 gallon soon. I want the tanks to use to be understocked. I was thinking a fish that does well in a 20 gallon in the 38 gallon and 10 gallon fish for the 29 gallon. They would have to be able to handle a planted tank. I also don't want them to eat fry. I am a big fan of colony breeding.

We need to know your water parameters first. PH GH that sort of thing.

Shelldwelling cichlids (I have Multis. You can keep plants with them, but they dig often, so these guys might not be preferred), livebearers, halfbeaks, WCM (coldwater), zebra/leopard danios, and harlequin rasboras are a few I can think of. Of course, some of these fish prefer different levels of hardness, so double check their needs before you buy.

I was thinking strictly Livebearers. Thank you for the help.
