I noticed some stringy white fluff in my water today. At first I thought it was a clump of cat hair that might have gotten into a water change bucket, but it's definitely not cat hair. It forms filamentous white clumps (they look brown when exposed to air) that stick to just about everything.

I cleaned the filter intake, and noticed a lot more stuck to it, so I just scrubbed it clean with a toothbrush. I also rinsed some decorations that had it stuck to them in tank water.

I've just done a 50% water change, and skimmed out what else I could get with a net.

Tank stats:

Volume: 55g
Ammonia: 0
NitrIte: 0
Nitrate: 40 (Before the water change, probably around 20 now)
pH: 7.4

Stock: 6 black tetras, 5 pearl danios, 5 peppered corys, 2 otos, 2 checkered barbs, 1 blue panchax, 1 apple snail, moderately planted.
Filtration: 540 ghp in two external filters

Sounds like hair algae or fungus.
You might be better off posting this thread in tropical discussion.
