Common names: Spotted gar

Scientific names: Lepisosteus oculatus

Family: Lepisosteadae

Origin: North and Central America

Maximum size: 4 feet long is the wild record, 2-3 feet long is more common in aquaria

Care: A large tank is a must with these ancient predators, unlike many fish they are very inflexible. Recommended tank size would be 7x3x2 but the bigger the better. These fish are prodominantly surface dwellers but will occasionally rest on the bottom. They are aggresive and will eat anything that they can swallow, tank mates should be large and robust. Temperature should be between 74-80 with a neutral ph. Smaller fish will appreciate tall or floating plant for security. Heavy filtration is needed and strong currents are preffered. These fish can give a nasty bite so care must be taken.

Feeding: Smaller specimens will eat small foods like bloodworms and river shrimp, larger fish will accept whole fish (live or dead); prawns, mussles etc
