I rescued two male bettas from Walmart tonight. I talked to the manager, pointing out that several had the starts of fin rot/melt, but apparently, they don't do water changes. She'll set them aside and they might give them some medicine. <grrrrrr> I only had two free hospital tanks, so I took the two that looked the worst. One guy just has some curling/melting of his fins but seems like he's going to do just fine (gobbled up the bloodworm I gave him tonight and is swimming happily), but the other looks almost emaciated as his stomach is caved in, and he seems to have trouble holding his body straight (like he's too weak to hold himself straight in the water). I added AquaSafe+, Melafix, and "Fungus clear" to their water. I know for the less sick one, daily water changes (uncycled, but filtered tanks), gradually build up feeds, but for the sicker guy, I'm not sure if there's anything else I should be doing for him.

Do not use Melafix or Pimafix on labyrinth fishes like Bettas. It leaves an oily film on the surface and they can suffocate.

The best thing to treat finrot in any fish is with water changes. Put the fish into a container with clean dechlorinated water and change the water every day. If you have an established aquarium use the water from that to do the water changes on the Betta containers.

If the damaged fins goes white and fluffy then they need treating for fungus.
If the damaged fins go red or get red lines in (hard to tell on red fish) and don't start to look normal after a few days in good water, then look at treating for a bacterial infection. But normally clean water does the job.

You can also use breeding nets in an established tank and put the male betta in them. the following links have a couple of breeding nets.

Ooh, thanks for the info on the MelaFix. I'll stop that right away.

That's all the same fish. The other is reddish, too, but not as sickly as the one I added pics of. He's (#2) already looking better this morning--his color is coming out and he's showing off his fins.
