Hey all,

Another question. Some of my guppies seem to be pretty active at the top of the tank almost all of tiem time, whereas others chill in the middle or bottom.

Some also have pretty red gills, whereas the male and another female are either not red at all/very slightly.

Really worried - is anything wrong?

Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - Around 20ppm
Ammonia - test kit bit hard to show, but definatly under 0.1ppm, would love to say 0 but will be cautious
pH- kit seems to hate my water, with the readings i'm given i'll say around 7.5

How many gallons is the tank please?
How many fish and which type?
What's the make of the test kit you are using?

Do the fish gasp as the surface of the tank?
Any signs of laboured breathing?
Any excess slime on the gills, body, fins?
Do the gills look swollen, sticking out?
Do the fish dart around the tank,?
Any signs of flicking and rubbing?
Do the fish swim in a jerky movement?
Amy tiny red pin prick marks on gills, body fins?

Took a look at video but it's hard to tell when there constantly moving. Just love guppies.

33 gallons, only the 4 guppies right now, and an API Master kit.

As far as I can tell there is no gasping when they are near the top, and there is no excess slime/nothing looks swollen, just the actual gills/behind the head on the sides can be red.

Their movement goes from a meander to a burst of speed, then some wandering, seems normal I think.

How long has the tank been set up?
How old is your test kit? Assuming that a liquid test kit.
Just need to ask.

I would just preform a few water changes for now.
Doesn't sound like a parasite involved just yet.
Make sure there not acting listless and lethargic.
Resting in plants, or bottom of tank for long periods of time.

Almost two years, loss of fish due to extremely poor weather over the winter. It was well established and I think the plants helped sustain it until now. The reads are pretty normal.

Its a liquid kit, I think its relatively widely used here, it's only 6/7 months old. They're all a lot slower with the lights off now, so I'll see how they are tomorrow but they all seem to move a fair bit.

Picking up some moss tomorrow so will get LFS to check water just in case. Plenty of filtration/aeration too - I have around 3x as much as needed.

Just preform some water changes.
Red gills can be caused by ammonia, gill flukes, bacterial.

Not sure if some guppies do have red gills. as long as there not inflamed and sticking out.
Make sure there not rubbing there gills on objects in the tank.

It's hard to test for ammonia when there colours look the same.
Maybe half dose some salt to the tank for now.

Will do, they're due some fresh water!

I've never used salt in an aquarium before, is there any reading on dosage/what salt I use?

I appreciate its late here in the UK, so a massive thanks for your help!

With then not being used to salt I would just half dose.
It will protect there gills abit.
Just add 3 tablespoons of salt to a jug of tank water. Stir well till the salt dissolves and add to the tank.
They might start to flick and rub at first but should settle down.

Okay thanks, defiantly going to try that tomorrow. Thanks for your help, will re-quote if I need help!

Thanks again.

Guppies were the first fish I ever kept. There still special to me.

Good Luck.

Guppies looking better today, gills are not as red as i had thought compared to pictures, so they must just be naturally slightly pink.

I have some Molly's now while my brother sets his tank up and they're showing no signs of anything wrong right now (touch wood).
