Hi guys I have a ciano cf40 filter and was wondering instead of using the correct parts which I find quite expensive.

Do you think it would be ok to cut up filter foam/carbon foam then maybe use some sort of ceramic rings as well.

That stuff is loads cheaper to buy in bulk and last much longer?

Any help would be great. I'll post a pic of the filter to.

Yes you can use aftermarket parts for filter materials. Use a pr of scissors to cut a piece of sponge (or several pieces) and put tem in the filter. Sponges will last for years and only need to be replaced when they fall apart.

Don't bother with ceramic or plastic beads, just use sponges.

Do not replace all the filter media at the same time. Replace one piece and wait at least one month before replacing another piece. The filter materials will have beneficial filter bacteria living on and in them and if you replace them all at the same time, you will lost the bacteria and the aquarium will go through the cycling process again.
