Good evening! Can someone look at my pics of this betta and tell me what sex you think it is? I bought it as a baby girl when she was very tiny. Sheā€™s been raised in my sorority tank and doing fine. I just canā€™t locate an egg spot on her and her fins are long. Any experts out there that can tell by body shape or anything else besides egg spot? Itā€™s hard to get her standing still. Thanks so much.

How old is the fish?

Going by the fins I would say its a young male.

If you look at the area where the fish poops from, the females have a small white ovipositor (egg laying tube, where the poop comes out of) and the males have a dark ovipositor.

Yes, I can see them on the rest of the girls but I never can a good look at this one because the fins are longer. I guess Iā€™m going to have to net it to get a good look. I just donā€™t need a male in with a bunch of females! Right now itā€™s only about 3.5 to 4 months old. It has gotten very territorial with a tiki head house and wonā€™t share it. May be time for one more tank! Thanks so much!

Most definitely a male. So yes. You will need a new tank. [emoji16]

I was leaning the same way but I finally caught it in a net and it has a white egg spot. Now I donā€™t know what to think! Could a young male have an egg spot?

OK. Hereā€™s some pics of her underside.

I can't see the ovipositor.

The ovipositor is a tiny little tube about 1mm long and is where the poop comes out. The next time the fish goes to the toilet see if there is a small white lump there.

Young males often have a false egg spot and those normally go away as they mature. If you stuff the belly with food it may reappear though. A female always has a noticeable egg spot and I do not see one on yours. Plus the fins are far too long for the average female CT. Couple that with the body shape (big head, not terribly fat like a female CT) it is likely a male.

Look at the ventral fins on the fish they should tell you everything you need to know.

I know what the ovipositor looks like. Thatā€™s the problem. Lol. There isnā€™t one. Today, I have a bubble nest in my sorority. Where can I put another 5G???

At what age do they start breeding? Iā€™m asking because Iā€™m getting a new 45G tank for Christmas. Then Iā€™ll have a empty 10G and stand that I can use. Heā€™s probably about 6 months old if Iā€™ve had him almost 4 and he was 2 mos. when I got him. He was very, very, tiny. Thatā€™s why I took her now him.

Wait, I just found a pic of her when I got her in August. So she/he is about 5 months old.
