i have a platy who is about to give birth and the male is staying beside her. Iā€™ve read that he make is waiting for her to give birth but he isnā€™t nipping her belly or being aggressive he is just swimming beside her and scaring off the other fish, what does this mean?

Mine have done that. As soon as they give birth they are ready to breed again. He wants to keep other males away. That and heā€™s waiting for dinner! If you want to keep the fry then move the mother to a nursery tank to give birth. It wonā€™t hurt her if you do it gently. Lol

Move the male and leave the female alone. Add lots of plants and don't lift the female out of water. If you have to move the female, scoop her up in a container of water and keep her in water at all times.

Keep the male away from the female for at least 1 week after she has given birth so she can recover. Do not move the female for at least 1 week after she has given birth.
