the second phase is when you get the nitrite spike, now you have to wait for the colony of bacteria that converts nitrite to nitrate to grow. it might seem like its taking forever but then apparently it happens almost over night (after days that is)
im at the same position you're at, except mine took weeks to get there lol

just top up once every 24 hrs

it's like humans, we need a certain amount of food every day, but we don't immediately start to die when we stop eating. so long as you top up once every 24 hrs you won't have any die off. :good:
 
good because i dont want to loose what i have gained, another thing is when i do my 90 percent water change, do i just turn the filter off and throw the sponges in the tank (fluval 2 internal filter).
 
turn off the filter and heater but leave them in-situ then drain as much water as you can, top it back up with dechlorinated water, when the inlet for the filter is covered you can switch that back on and when the heater is totally covered you can turn that back on.

the media won't dry out in the time it takes to drain it and fill it back up.
 
ok, so just turn them both off until its filled back up with water, gotcha, cheers.
