Killing Algae

I had a large outbreak of hair like algae all over my planted 55 gallon aquarium, and at the suggestion of a few members i have started to use flourish excel. Since then it appears that the algae has started to break off, but i guess it is turning red, is that because it is dieing. i apologize i could not be more descriptive but I am away on business and my fiance is taking care of this for me. I am hoping red is the algae dieing, if anyone can help i would appreciate it.

Was it black brush algae? (looks like patches of fuzzy black hair).... It turns red when it dies so that's a good sign
That's what mine did when we got it a long while ago. I did the excel thing and one day woke up to all of the BBA red and dead
