Im not all that new to fish care and housing, temps, water samples etc. I was an aquattics specialist for a few years at a large chain of pet stores, but I am new to owning a 55 gallon for myself at home and fell in love with Angel fish and blood parrots, I have one quick question though, I have read numerous things about why my Angel fish have disappearing and reappearing strips, my lights are fine, plenty of room, no high levels of ammonia, no fluctuation of nitrates or nitrates, maybe due to small we say going through fish puberty? I'll try to post pics

Welcome to the forum, Missbanks :)

Many cichlids, including angels, can change colour according to their mood or health.

In general, fish tend go paler when they're frightened, and darker when they're angry; but if it's happening a lot, it means your fish are very stressed about something, and it could be affecting their long term health.

Could you give us some more details on your set up, please? Could you post the actual numbers from all your tests, including pH and hardness, if you know them, as well as exactly what fish you have (species and numbers), plus a picture of your whole tank?

The more details we have, the better we can help you work out what's going on :good:

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Besides what Fluttermoth has mentioned, fish have different colours and patterns for day and night. Many fish go darker at night and lighter during the day.

Turning the aquarium lights on can stress the fish if the room is dark, and they can show different colours from this.
In the morning you should open the curtains or turn the room light on about 30minutes or more before turning the tank light on.
In the evening turn the room light on, then turn the tank light off. Wait at least 30 minutes before turning the room light off.

If you have several lights on the tank then do the above but only turn one tank light on, wait an hour or more before turning the other tank light on. At night turn one tank light off, wait an hour before turning the room light on and turning the other tank light off. Then wait another 30 minutes or more before turning the room light off.

This allows the fish to wake up more gently instead of going from a dark tank to a brightly lit tank. And at night it allows the fish to settle down for the night in low level room light before the room goes completely dark.
