I got a fifty five gallon tank. I am trying to get a filter and hood for it with my tax refund. I might have asked before but how would I know what size hood to use?
I am thinking of getting a marine land penguin power filter for 50 to 70 gallon tank.

What are your intentions for fish species? And live plants? You may wonder why I ask, but the filter should be geared to the needs of the fish when it comes to water movement. "Filtration" as in clean water is likely going to be present with any filter intended for the size of tank.

As for the hood, you presumably want a light plus a cover. A manufactured hood for the tank size will likely be more expensive, than a glass cover set with the light fixture sitting across the tank frame end to end. But the light is important, for fish and plants if these are intended. LED, T5, T8 are the basic options in lighting, but are not by any means equal or even workable in some situations.

I'm running a penguin 350 on one 55 full of Africans, it's plenty.

Got a ugf and a can on the other.

Canopys are really easy to make.
