Each ring usualy indercates a year in cold water species but i guess it's not the case in more sub-tropical to tropical species, but it looks good, and you can see the colour pigment cells in side the scale it's self, how ever due to the time frame then colour has reduced and when alive these colour cell's would be much larger.

this is the gill arch, on the right habd side u can see the fillaments but I'm trying to find the gill rackers, these are used in Id'ing species but i can see any, guess i gotta get more use to the microscope, but i'm having fun looking.

Nice pics! Do you know how long a period a ring would indicate in tropical fish? Or do you know how old your gambusia was?

The fish was wild cought and had been in the uk for 20 months, in cool water the rings indercate a year, but this must be different in sub-tropical.

I'll have to do scale samples of live fish to see what they do i think.
