Plus cartridges are a pain in the rear
The first thing I do with a new HOB is throw the cartridges away, I do not bother using them at all, Then I fill the filter with ceramic or sintered glass media, the pre filter sponge on the intake takes care of the solid particles, I havent had to clean the inside of my HOB since I got it about 6 months ago.

Every week when I change water I give the pre filter sponge a good rinse in hot water, I do not care about the bacteria in the sponge as all the important stuff is done in the filter itself.

This is a " cheap n nasty " HOB on my Aquael cube as you can see its adjustable.

You could do something like this,

If you do go with a canister you can drill extra holes in the spray bar like I did here
