Bio media questions

i have a hob filter, and do I need media and a cartridge, or will just media work? Also, how does media work?

I use sponges in HOB filters. The sponges hold beneficial bacteria and trap the gunk. Every 2-4 weeks you squeeze the sponges out in a bucket of tank water and put them back in the filter.

What sponges do you recommend?

I only use Aqua Clear HOB filters and sponges but that's what I have access to. But realistically, any aquarium filter sponge will do, whatever is cheapest and fits in the filter. You can easily cut the sponge with a pair of scissors so if in doubt, buy slightly bigger and trim it to fit.
