Why is it not recommended to get one male betta in a community tank? Does it make me a bad fish owner to keep one male betta in my community tank?

Bettas are very difficult fish to mix with others.

First of all, many bettas are very aggressive towards other fish; secondly, because of their long fins, the betta itself can be the victim of bullying, aggression and nipping by the other fish.

So, you have a potentially aggressive fish that is prone to being bullied! Not an easy combination to make work :)

Of course, all animals are individuals, so some people do manage to keep bettas in communities, but it goes wrong so often that we don't recommend it.

If you are going to try it, you should not do so unless you have another tank you can put the betta in, if it doesn't work out. And you need that tank in advance; you can't rely on being able to go out and buy one, as you might already have dead or suffering fish by then.
