Hiya All,

I have been to the LFS with my wife and we both loved the Marbled Veil Angelfish, our tank is just in the middle of cycling now (well day 5).

I have a Fluval Roma 90 Litre Tank, the dimensions are 60 x 35 x 45 cm (23.6 x 13.8 x 17.8 inch).

So 2 questions really, is our tank big enough to house them? if so how many?

And would we have any room for anything else? if so, what else?

We like the looks of the tetra's, all types really, Tiger Barb's, Marbled Headstander, Molly's any of these suitable?

Thanks for the help!

Martin

Hi Martin,
Ideally Angelfish would need a bigger tank - 36"x 22" x 18" or similar......they end up at around 6" top-bottom and 4" wide....... See; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXNRcb7B-kE

......A large Angel would maybe try to eat any small Tetra's, but some are o.k if they have lived together for a long time........Tiger Barbs would nip the Angels fins, especially a Veiltail..........Mollies tend to like some Aquarium Salt in their water, and like More Alkaline conditions - Angels love More Acidic, soft water (PH; 6.4 - 7.2) ...

>> Good tankmates for Angels can be; Larger Tetra's (Rummy-Noses, Congo, Penguin, Black Widow......+ Corydoras Catfish, Clown Loaches, Some types of Gourami and Small Bristlenose Plecs or a Chain Loaches........there are many more to choose from, though!!)

....If you definately want to keep Angels in a happy environment to live a long life, then a Larger Aquarium would be good.

hope it works out well... they are my 2nd favourite fish...

damn I was really hoping you were going to tell me that I could fit a few in and everybody would be happy! Unfortunately I don't have the room in the house for a bigger tank! I would love one though!

So I wont be able to keep them in my first tank then... oh well!

:(

ps. what were your orange and black fish in with the angelfish? you have a lovely tank! :)

....You could put 1 or 2 small Angels in that tank, but would need a new home in about 9 months...... They need regular water changes when they are young, for them to grow well.

(the Orange fish are 'Lyretail Swordtails' - which I Started to breed a while back...)

Painful to see someone "just miss" on the right environment for the fish they most want but I have to agree with Rossy, a 25g is just a bit too small to feel comfortable about putting angels in. Usually the 28g, 29g, 30g tanks that are tall (17",18" in height) are considered the very bottom starting point for angels and just a single pair of angels at that and of course some don't even think that size is ideal for angels and would say a 55 might be a better starting point. Anyway, just wanted to give you one more member agreeing with the advice.

Well thanks for all of the guidance!

I will just have to look for different fish that we both love! I do really care about fish welfare so i wanted to make sure it was suitable, if it isn't then i'm just glad somebody told me so I didn't make any angel fish unhappy! :)

I've never had them but I've learned on this forum that German Blue Rams make really wonderful "centerpiece fish" like angels. I'm not sure about what type of space they need and other compatibility things (would be wise to investigate these things with other members) but I do know they are pretty sensitive to their water and would be better off introduced perhaps after the tank has been running well for 6 months and that good maintenance habits would have to be practiced (good weekly gravel-clean water changes etc.)

Thanks Wd, yeah they look lovely...

I will have a look around for others fish that go well with them...

There is just too many to chose from!

Personally, I think its handy that fishless cycling (or any kind of cycling usually) takes a long time as it gives you the excuse to start doing all the work of writing down all the species down that you like, comparing the general stats they like to the stats possible from your tap water and then looking at how they would go with your size tank and then finally how they would go with each other. The number of combinations of things to work out is huge if you do it right and if you're unfamiliar with the species then many of the steps require interaction with the experienced folks here which adds even more time. You can never do it all but the more of it you do, the closer you get to a better community and also you get better at it for next time.

german blue rams would be ok in your tank

you would need to make sure you have a male and a female, although it would depend on what you keep them with

I know this might sound like a silly question but is there such a thing as a Dwarf Angel Fish ??

Not that I know of! There are a lot of experienced members here but I don't anyone is going to dig up one of those.. at least I don't think  ...

Maybe a Bolivian Ram? Perhaps davo or some of the other cichlid knowledgeable members could help you figure out the right cichlid for your 25g. There's not going to be anything physically close to that large veil look of the angels but one surprise benefit that could come out of your disappointment is that there are other cichlids that have loads more personality. Some would put angels lower on the "personality" scale among the cichlids, so you might end up with a friend in the tank that you find provides you with more entertainment in the long run.

Don't allow the angels when they're young to fool you, the will indeed grow too large.

Thanks Wd... don't worry im definitely not going to be buying an angelfish, im seriously tempted by the German Blue Ram, they look lovely!

Those Bolivian Ram's looks nice, could I keep a couple rams of each type?

My rule with cichlids is to treat the research for each species independently. First figure out exactly the perferred number and male/female ratio and know what the mating behaviours are going to entail. Then, if you plan to attempt to mix more than one species of cichlid you have to research that too, to figure out whether its even do-able.

Its a very serious thing with cichlids, you can't take it lightly, but for most people they are a centerpiece fish, so people are willing to take the extra time involved. There are enthusiasts here who know all about this stuff, so hopefully they will step up and help if you start a thread with specific questions either here or in one of the species-specific sub-forums.

I've kept angels and Jack Dempseys and a few others but my knowledge is not good enough to be like one of the cichlid folks on this forum. I think there may be some well-known combos of mult. species but I don't know what those are.

Also, for you, there may still be other centerpiece fish to consider, like gouramis. These have less personality but do some interesting things (like building bubble nests!) and are very beautiful and peaceful with other community tank members. There's a wide range, some being too agressive for a smaller community tank but some being just fine.
