Hi,

I am setting up a African Cichlid tank, tank is 250 litres (100 x 50 x 50) and was wondering if an air pump is needed? I have had air pumps in my other tanks, but I have read varying differences to have or not to have with Cichlids. What are your thoughts and if so, what size and brand?

Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome.

So it's totally up to you. Any water will have more than enough oxygen in provided that the surface has movement.

I would buy it since it is inexpensive. You may consider getting a battery operated one so in the event of a power cut you still have some sort of filtration

I'd consider it and (as said above) battery operated would be great. A friend of mine had his power out for over a week, but luckily he had a battery operated air pump so all was good.

Hello

I assume you are talking about African rift lake cichlids? Be aware that your tank is pretty small, too small for malawi cichlids for sure.

Normally, there is no need for a separate air pump.
