Hello all,

I am relatively new to keeping tropical fish as I inherited a tank about a year ago when I moved house.

The tank currently has six gaurami's in it and five tiger barbs. The tiger barbs were introduced about four weeks ago and I am a little worried about them. Three of them seem to have developed two red patches about midway on their undersides. I don't recall them being there when I first got them. They are quite shy fish, hiding behind a plant at the back of the tank, but they do seem to chase each other quite a lot.

the tank is 2'x1'x1'. Once a week, I add a capful of 'Nutrafin - biological Aquarium Supplement' to the tank. As for ph, temp etc, I am uncertain.

any advice appreciated

tiger barbs will develop more of orange in their bodies. could just be the coloring. the males will have more of the orange/red coloring than the females. keep an eye on them, if they are eating and swimming just fine could be that they are just getting their adult colors. also are notorious for being fin nippers. they are schooling fish and like to have groups of six or more though.

This could be a few things but,

To better help could you tell us a few things:
Filtration being used
tank size GALLONS
amount of fish (rule of thumb, 1" per gallon)
type of fish
maint. schedule
water test results ( amonia, nitrates , ph, and so on
additives used


These can all help determine what the problrm may be. Could be a disease, fighting, water quality, can contribute to what you discribe. The MORE detail the better the chances of properly pin point the problem / cause.

The only thing I know bout tiger barbs is they would be to small to put in my tanks....

Would wind up being fish bait.....

you do need to check the temp of the tank because if this is to low then your in for problems, tiger barbs are active fish and yes they do chase one another around, they are best kept in groups of 6 or more then they are busy chasing each other around insted of nipping the other fish you keep,
you need to check also the ph amonia nitrite and nitrate levels,
as if these levels are to high your fish are at risk from toxic poison and
diesese,
