Hi guys, haven't posted for quite some time, just wondering what your thoughts are on internal filters for a 15 to 20 gallon tank, I've been out of the freshwater game for a while, so I'm alittle rusty equipment wise. Unfortunately it can't be a HOB since we have some very inquisitive cats, so I'm thinking a power filter with decent flow output and good surface area media wise.

Tank will be moderately stocked with smaller fish (kubotai rasbora / pygmy cories / lamp eyes / shrimp among other things).

Fluval U series

+1

Personally, I'd get an external filter such as the Fluval 106 (for a 15 gallon) or the Fluval 206 (for a 20 gallon) :) It'll be easier to service and there will be more room in your tank, not to mention superior filtration and larger bio media capacity.

Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciated. I'll look into the U series, the last time I bought a filter the plus series was still going. As for the fluvals, although they have their advantages, I've always preferred the Tetratecs external wise. This time I'm on a budget, and unfortunately don't have the time or money for an external.

It's all OK, we all have our preferences! I swear by Fluval but Eheim and Tetratec are also fantastic manufactorers. I use Fluval mainly because I have a main dealership for Hagen near me and parts are readily available within a few hours notice. :good:

That's pretty handy for you. We use the 04 series at work, a leak from time to time but nothing too serious. Just opened the shed to find a fluval 3+ and smaller internal, both working perfectly. They have been chosen ! Changing the media on the fluval and adding noodles / floss to the other one. : )
