I ask as I have just got delivery of an overhead LED system and it is surprisingly bright. It is in fact brighter than the existing tube which is integrated into the aquarium hood. now I had in mind to send this LED back but I am now having second thoughts. I want a planted tank so am I better off sticking with tubes? I have some t5 ho tubes coming soon? The tank is 20 gallon. Would LED result in poor plant growth?

Depends on the LED system, but yes most are not meant for plant growth. What brand and model is the fixture?

It is not any known brand. Looks like its from china so doubtful of its credibility. Decided to stick with the hood and in built light!

I have a Fluval edge with led lighting and my plants are doing very well. Granted the tank's not very big but the lights aren't very bright either and yet the plants are growing well.

as said these will grow plants, but just a lot slower. I also got mine and am using it along with my other light, it does give off a nice effect. It has given me the push to order some TMC grow beams though. George Farmer reckons these give about 11w T5 power.
