I have a DS Crowntail I bought from a petstore and he has these red marks on his gills. I can't tell if they're markings or sores. I've very concerned. He doesn’t spread out his fins, but he eats fine and is interested in his environment. I haven’t had him long enough to know what is his norm. I have no idea what to do.

welcomeani.gif to the forum. Intoduce yourself in the newbie section. biggrin.gif

If you just bought it, return it and get another one. It's better than spending money on the meds. confused.gif

Treatments (gill disease or flukes) is better water conditions (water changes) and antibacterial meds.

That's the problem, I got REALLY attatched to him, REALLY fast. I'd rather spend money on meds than give him up.

What this person is describing sounds similar to what mine is having and they are red in color. Starting along the edge of his gill-flaps (whatever you call them) and then curve up by his face, in a kind of U shape.

Are the "red spots" like two red lines? Betta splendens have twin gill bars which are red, and that could be what you're seeing.

You can see the gill bars on my fish, Rosso.

Gill bars? That might be it. They are red.

Like I said just now "Starting along the edge of his gill-flaps (whatever you call them) and then curve up by his face, in a kind of U shape."

Am I just freaking out over nothing?

Edit - Oh, yeah, kind of like in the picture!

Sounds like gill bars. smile.gif No big deal, a lot of people ask about them as they are more apparent in some bettas and almost non-existent in others.

It’s just my laptop is going in to be fixed tomorrow morning and I needed help now so I knew what to do before I couldn’t ask anyone else for help. I think that and the fact that I’ve never seen them before on other fish freaked me out more than usual. *Huge sigh of relief*

Praise the gods! Thank you SO MUCH!
