Ok well it looks like one of my fish has pop eye, but it looks like it's in BOTH eyes so it's a bit hard to tell? Both eyes look larger than I remember, so I'm guessing it's pop eye. My question is, can I treat it with just a water change and stuff? I know a reason could be poor quality water. My PH is 6.6 Ammonia 0 Not sure about nitrate and that. I don't have the kit for them, although I am going to ask for them for my birthday next month lol. But yeah...back to my question... Can I treat it with just a proper water change and that? I'm a bit skint these days and was hoping this could be a way around it? Thanks! |

Pop-eye can indeed affect both eyes. One of the main causes is water quality issues, which is more likely if both eyes are affected. Other causes could be bacterial infection or injury. Could you provide the following information please:
Tank size in litres or gallons? Inhabitants? Fish affected? How long has the tank been set up? Any chance of a pic? |

Do you think it would help? The water change certainly won't hurt (just keep it below a 50% change). If it's water quality related, it will help. If not, the fish will need an antibacterial medication - in which case, it's best to isolate the fish and treat it seperately. What kind of fish was affected? It's a molly. I know what to use to treat it because I have had to treat it in the past. I just wanted to find out if a water change would help it. I've recently had my hours cut WAY back at work and money is a little tight. I'm not sure about where you guys live, but the pop eye treatment here is like $21, and you really need to buy 2 because you don't really get enough tablets in 1 bottle to fully treat my tank. |

Have you tried looking at a broad spectrum anti internal bacteria med? Helped reduce the popeye growth on my betta, (which was handy as it was cheap) and brought the life back into him-no more laying on the bottom of the tank. I treated with myxazin after that and it cleared it completely.

I'm going to have to go to my LFS tomorrow after work and ask them. I don't have a seperate tank to isolate the sick fish. Well I do, but it's full of ammonia that I can't seem to get rid of (another thread) Is pop eye painful? |
