I Purchased 2 Bolivian Rams and 2 Firemouths today!
Been after Rams for ages but my LFS had some today labled as 'Crown Jewel Cichlids.' Anyway I've now added them to my 50G (see stocking below) and they seem to have settled in. Was considering adding a few more. Perhaps 4? What do you think? The Firemouths are VERY small (about 1"). They will be moved to a 30G or larger when they get a bit bigger. Been missing having a cichlids since I had to give up my Oscar. Good to be back! Wilde. |

I think it would be best if you kept just 2. Rams are a pair fish and multiple pairs might get aggressiveto each other(that is if all 4 fish find another of the opposite sex.). Chances are you would get a pair if you had four and the pair would bully the odd two. If you have a lot of caves and a DENSELY planted tank, then it might work, but you never know till you try! It is all up to you if you want 2 or 4.
I'm curious. Are the firemouths aggressive to the tetras? I would think so, but I've never done any research on firemouths. Cool tanks! |

The tank is well planted with plenty of stones and bogwood so I may get 2 more. I only got the firemouths and tetras today. They seem fine at the moment but I am 100% certain that this will not last . Will get the FMs in a new tank in the next few weeks though. Thanks for saying my tanks are cool This post has been edited by OscarWilde: May 18 2008, 11:18 AM |

From what I've read over at cichlid-forum.com, to see the best and most natural behavior from Bolivian Rams its best to have groups of more than two. 10 square inches per fish. As long as you have plenty of territory markers using plants, rocks and bog wood u should be fine. I have six in a heavily planted 240 liter tank with plenty of territory makers. They fight but nothing too serious. No damage is done.

What kind of Tetras do you have? If the Firemouths get big enough I am concerned they will eat your small tetras. In the future, get them a tank bigger than 30g so you can have more room to play with. Firemouths are generally good tankmates for Rams or other N. and S. american Cichlids. Any pics?

Hi Los They are Silvertip tetras Hasemania nana The tank was previously used as a species tank for my largest Redclaw which escaped and died last week. Anyway, take your point about larger than 30G. The FMs are tiny at the moment, shorter than the Tetras so should be ok for a month or two. I’m planning a new 40 – 60G Cichlid tank for the next few months so thought I would get started on growing these guys up. Worst comes to worst I can move the tetras to my 50G. Going to get some decent photos of my tanks this evening, I have been meaning to for ages. Cheers. Wilde |
