Hi Was looking at one of my gobies last nite and noticed he had some weird growth on his top fin and a bit on his tail.. What is it and what shall i get to treat it??
Sorry pics not very good.. I did a water change last nite and water test all was good. My SG is at 1.0006 They are brown the growths. What could they be? He is still eating and swimming around as normal.. I put in some primaflex as it looks a bit fungal and thought that would be better than nothing. Thanks

Lumps on fins can be lymthocystis but they look like a cluster of berries or a cauliflower, but they are usually white or pink.
Shine a torch on the fish with tanks lights out to see if you can see and golden spots or golden dusting on the fish. Any signs of flicking and rubbing. This post has been edited by Wilder: May 9 2008, 09:50 AM |

All I can find on brown lump is velvet to lymthocystis.
off-white to brown lumps with a cauliflower-like texture, sometimes small but potentially large. These growths are commonly on the fins but may be elsewhere. I wouldn't add a med yet till you shine a torch on the fish to see if its velvet. Lymthocystis is viral. This post has been edited by Wilder: May 9 2008, 09:19 AM |

All I can find on brown lump is velvet to lymthocystis. off-white to brown lumps with a cauliflower-like texture, sometimes small but potentially large. These growths are commonly on the fins but may be elsewhere. Otherwise the fish seems healthy and happy. Lymphocystis, a relatively benign, non-contagious viral condition. Generally uncommon in freshwater fishes and almost only ever seen on members of "advanced" taxa such as spiny eels, cichlids, pufferfish, etc. Apparently caused by poor environmental conditions. Untreatable, though vets may be able to cut away damaged tissue on large fish. Being a viral disease, antibiotics have no effect at all. Primarily a cosmetic problem, after a period of many months (even years) the growths may disappear by themselves. Tumours are superficially similar but are part of the fish and usually have a visible network of blood vessels. Often have a silvery or pearly appearance thanks to the stretched skin. Most are benign (like warts on humans) and may go away eventually by themselves. Exceptions are where the tumours block the mouth, gills, or anus, in which case the fish should be painlessly destroyed. I wouldn't add a med yet till you shine a torch on the fish to see if its velvet. Lymthocystis is viral. Okay i will do the torch thing, I only got it last Wednesday and i do a water change every weekend and did an extra one last nite. You say it is Apparently caused by poor environmental conditions. Is that water quality?? Should i do water changes more often? When i do a water change i do 40% and take everything out and clean it as i have a problem with algea. Thanks |

You preform a water change and gravel vac once a week.
You just replace the filter floss and not touch the sponges in the filter. |

I have two filters one sponge filter and one that is built in the tank with like cotton wool a bag with carbon and a bag with white chalk things. So you think i do it enough? can this spread to my puffers???? i really dont want them to get anything... Thanks |

Don't no much about puffers,
If its velvet the whole tank will need treating. If its lymthocystis you need to remove the infected fish as if they burst they infect the tank. http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/manage...mphocystis.html This post has been edited by Wilder: May 9 2008, 09:38 AM |

The pics are blurry, I can see you have tryed your best taking the pics.
Do the growth look like a cauliflower. By the looks of it i'm inclined to say lymthocystis. The growths look more pinkish in colour to me. http://www.fishjunkies.com/Disorders/lumps.php This post has been edited by Wilder: May 9 2008, 01:07 PM |

Can you issolate the fish.
Never seen brown lumps or growths before in all the six years on forums. If you can issolate you could maybe try a bacterial med. But to be honest I think you are better getting advice from a vet. |

Would you take the fish to the vets? |

Okay, yes, these sound like lymphocystis. Brown, textured growths. Very distinct from, say, finrot.
No treatment. Not contagious. Not dangerous. Only common on "advanced" fish, typically marines, but also things like gobies. Lymphocystis is not a disease in the sense of being "caught" by the fish. It's triggered by environmental issues, including water quality but also more difficult to test things like heavy metals. It takes months, even years, to clear up. Best left alone, but do review maintenance of the aquarium and check whether you might have excess copper, heavy metals, etc. in the system (e.g., from your water supplier). Cheers, Neale |
