Poor water quality and poor diet I think are considered the leading factors, though there may be others.

Bad water quality, poor diet, black carbon and stress.

Hi everyone. bought a gold nugget plec yesterday (already got a ringlet plec in the tank) all seemed fine for a few hours until my ringlet plec decided to have a go at the gold nugget. is the ringlet being teritorial ? if so what is the best plan of action ? been keeping fish for years, but i am pretty new to pleco's.

Right the scars are permanent. You can also have a deterioration of the lateral line.
