Hi All

I have a Jewel Rekord 80 Aquarium which has been up and running for narly 2 1/2 years. It contains community fish and I have it planted it with crypts and valis. I have a nutrafin C02 unit and my lighting is a single jewel tube which is on for approx 8 hrs aday.

My problem is that I have black hair algae growing om most of my plants, decorations and glass. It is even starting to grow on my gravel substrate. It has been like this for while now and is getting worse.

It is getting to the point where I look at my tank and all I see is the algae and not mu fish or plants any more, know what I mean?

What should I do to get rid of the algae?

Matt

A pic would help identify the algae, but if it is black brush algae this is caused by inconsistent Co2 levels which is hard to avoid with yeast based systems, two nutrafins changed at different times can help keep the Co2 levels more even. The Co2 may not be much use anyway with the amount of light you have, so I would consider not using it, vallis and crypts can be grown quite well without it a few root tabs for the crypts would keep them happy. Siamese algae eaters SAEs do eat this algae so if you have space you could consider getting some. Seachem Execl overdosed will kill it and provide carbon for your plants. The other thing to consider is aerating your water for water changes so that the extra Co2 that some water companies use for tap water is driven off before you put the water in the tank.

try adding some shrimp because they might eat it.
