38 gallons, 4 Clown loachs, 3 Gold Severums, 6 False Julii Cory Cats, 5 Silver Hatchets, 3 Irridencent Sharks, 4 Tetras (2 Blackskirt 2 Whiteskirt), 3 Rasboras, 4 Black Ruby Barbs. Do you think I have too many fish? I want to add a few more.

First, what you need to do, is get rid of the ID sharks, and the clown loaches. The clown loaches need a tank at least 75 gallons, and get to be about 14 inches long, second the ID sharks need a tank at least 300 gallons, and get 3-4 feet long. Remove the ID sharks ASAP, the clown loaches can wait for a bit, as they are slow growing.


After that, you are very well stocked, and shouldn't add anymore fish.

Firstly, as said you need to remove the ID sharks and the clown loaches, ID sharks can reach sizes of 3' plus and weight upwards of 120lbs, I don't even think a 300gallon tank would be enough for one as these guys (like pacus) are tank busters (litterally!). As for the clown loaches, they need a tank of 55gallons minimum (sorry I don't think 75gallons is minimum for them), also the maximum size of a clown loach, on average, is 7-8", not 14". Although in the wild they may reach sizes of 14", in the aquairum they will not (unless placed in a 300gallon tank with a full diet of high protein and fatty amino acids). The Severums should go aswell, they reach sizes of about 8" and are HIGHLY agressive, your barbs, tetras, hatchets and corys will eventually be eaten (or picked on to death) by the Severums.

As to the tank, looks nice, I personally don't like the blue gravel, aswell with Cory catfish a sand bottom is best as it has minimal, if no, risk of damaging their barbels. Once the Severums, ID sharks and Clown loaches are remove you could add a few more fish to the tank, personally I'd work the level up of your shoaling fish and not add any new species. I'd say get 3 more black skirt tetras and 3 more white skirt tetras, atleast 2 more Rasboras, and a minimum of 1 more barb. After that, do not add any more fish, the tank will still be overstocked by adding these fish, however if diligent with water changes and if the tank is over filtered (ie. 70gallon filter on the 38gallon tank) all should go well.

Severums are not highly aggressive. In fact, they are quite timid! I have seen many clown loaches over a foot long, and personally wouldn't put them in anything under 75 gallons.

Its very overstocked. I have one id its now about 15 cm, he is in my 29 gal tank and i am going to get rid of it soon.

Severums are highly agressive as I said, try keeping a pair with any fish that are slower moving, they'll pick on the slower fish til the point of death, I know, I made the mistake of having 2 Turqouise (spelling?) Severums with Angelfish.

And yes, clown loaches CAN reach sizes of a foor or more as I said, but you need a HIGH PROTEIN deit and a very LARGE tank.

I have had no problems with them (both angelfish and severums) being in mixed community tanks. Severums really aren't that aggressive, and all the fish listed should be quick enough to escape the severum, if he does have a bad day. Ohh and BTW, thanks for capitalizing those words. I really wouldn't have read them, if it wasn't for that good ol' emphasizing!


On another note, where about in Canada do you live PRW1988?

With VERY frequent water changes and a VERY good filter you will be fine with that stock for now. However, the above comments should not be ignored. You have a very attractive set up. Looks clean too. But those fish will indeed outgrow your tank. Mine is nearly twice your size (tank, that is), and I wouldn't keep all them in there.

Lol sorry 'bout my agression towards ya Discus, I was a little... tipsy... that night lol. I guess it all depends on the fishes personallity entirly. I'm down in Ontario, I see your out in Calgary good to hear I got another cunuck to chat it up with on here lol.

The blue gravel bothers me too... lol

maybe not that vital but i'd like to comment on the Severum comments

in my opinion and experience its useless calling Sevs "aggressive" or "placid" these fish have temperaments that vary, like most fish, but Severums are particularly well known for it. I've heard them being kept with Guppies and Tetra's (and i'm talking adult severums) no problem and i've also heard them being the most aggressive thing in the tank and thats includes with Convicts, Blue Acara's and a Green Terror (that was larger than any of the Severums)
